FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington and Northern Vermont University-Johnson battled on Saturday afternoon to a 1-1 draw at Leib Field.
The Beavers controlled the pace and the ball for a majority of the contest on Saturday, but the Badgers defense and goalkeeper Isabel Atkisson (Baltimore, Maryland) was up to the challenge as they turned away several Beaver opportunities.
In the first half the teams played to a scoreless tie as Beavers held an 8-2 advantage in shots and 3-0 in corners. The Beavers would continue their pressure in the second half as they rifled off 16 more shots. The Beavers would have a great opportunity to score in the 51st minute when senior Midfielder Emily Boyle (Orleans, Mass.) would rip one off the crossbar from about 30 yards out.
The Beavers were not done hitting the frame however as sophomore forward Abby Lash (Waldoboro, Maine) would hit the crossbar just five minutes later. The Beavers would hit the crossbar one last time in the 68th minute when Emily Boyle beat her defender and ripped one over the goalie and off the crossbar.
The Beavers were awarded a goal moments later when a shot by freshman defender Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) ended up in the back of the net after it had gone wide and found a hole in the outside of the net. The referees would confer with one another before deciding to disallow the goal and keep the game scoreless.
The Beavers would finally be awarded a goal when junior midfielder Audrey Fletcher (Monmouth, Maine) sniped the upper left corner on a penalty kick. The Beavers were awarded the penalty kick after a handball was called in the box.
The Badgers answered quickly to tie the score as senior Emma Buonanno (Wolicott, Verm.) would fire one that squeaked under the dive of Beaver goalkeeper Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine) in the 81st minute.
The Beavers would respond with pressure of their own but were unable to find the back of the net and had to settle for a draw.
Following the contest the Beavers record sits at 2-5-1 and 1-1-1 in conference while the Badgers are now 0-4-3 and 0-1-2 in conference.
