FARMINGTON, Maine - On Saturday afternoon at Leib Field the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers held a majority of the possession and put great pressure on Northern Vermont University-Johnson in route to a 2-0 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory.
After a first half that saw the Beavers outshoot the Badgers 11-0, the Beavers had nothing on the scoreboard to show for it. But, the Beavers were able to crack the scoreboard just 7:57 into the second half when senior midfielder Aric Belanger (Manchester, Maine) deposited one into the back net off a beautiful feed from fellow senior Yusuf Mohamed (Lewiston, Maine). The goal from Belanger was his fourth goal in his last three games.
The Beavers would continue to put pressure on the Badgers, having great chances to double their lead but Badger goalkeeper Pat Austin (Andover, N.Y.) stood tall in net for the Badgers, making some big saves to keep the lead at just a goal.
The Beavers would continue to hold the majority of the possession before they were able to crack the scoreboard for a second time in the 86th minute when junior forward Cassidy Pound (Montville, Maine) tallied his first goal of the season. Pound's goal was an unassisted marker after Zach Chaisson (Scarborough, Maine) rifled a shot on net that Austin saved directly off the crossbar. The ball bounced off the crossbar directly to Pound who was able to add the insurance marker for the Beavers.
After not registering a shot on net for the first 86 minutes of the game, the Badgers would tally three in the final four minutes. Beaver goalkeeper Jonah Sautter (Lisbon, Maine) denied all three chances for the Badgers to preserve the shutout.
The Beavers held a 26-3 advantage in shots, 7-3 in shots on goal and 11-2 in corner kicks.
Following the victory the Beavers improved to 2-2-1 and 2-1 in conference while the Badgers drop to 1-5-1 and 0-3 in conference.
