FARMINGTON, Maine - The Bates Bobcats came out of the gates on fire against the University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team on Tuesday evening in Dearborn Gymnasium en route to an 84-50 victory.
The Bobcats converted on eight of their first 11 field goal attempts and jumped out to a quick 20-0 lead five minutes into the game. Morgan Kennedy and Meghan Graff each scored nine points to combine to score 18 of the 20 points on the run for the Bobcats. A three-pointer from junior guard Maddy White (Waldoboro, Maine) ended the Bobcats run and helped to settle some nerves for the Beavers. A pair of three's from freshman guard Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) to close the quarter brought the Beavers back within 14.
The 2nd quarter began with a pair of 6-0 runs for each team. The initial, from Bates to stretch their lead out to 20 once again. The Beavers responded quickly with their own run to haul back within 14. The Bobcats closed the half on a 10-4 run and would take a 42-22 lead into halftime.
Junior forward Jacqui Hamilton (Gorham, Maine) hit a three to open up the second half but the Bobcats answered with a 14-0 run to up their lead to 31. The Beavers were unable to cut significantly into the deficit for the remainder of the contest.
The Beavers were plagued on the glass all evening as the Bobcats held a 55-32 advantage of the boards. The Bobcats also grabbed 26 offensive rebounds.
Dwyer led the Beavers offensively as she stayed aggressive throughout the game and scored a team-high 17 points on 6-12 shooting from the field and a perfect 3-3 shooting from downtown. Hamilton and sophomore forward Jalyn Stacey (West Baldwin, Maine) each added eight points for the Beavers.
Graff and Kennedy led the Bobcats offensively. Kennedy scored a game-high 22 points connecting on 5-11 three's. Graff scored 21 points on 9-11 shooting. Else Delaurio added a double-double off the bench with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Beavers drop to 2-13 on the season while the Bobcats are now 8-7.
