Owls Outpace Beavers, Take Game One of Weekend Series

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team took the long trip to Presque Isle today to take on the University of Maine at Presque Isle in the first of a two game weekend series. The Beavers dropped game one of the series 74-47 at the hands of the Owls.

The Owls used a huge second quarter to pull away and the Beavers were unable to overcome the deficit in the second half, dropping to 2-16 on the season and 1-8 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play.

In the 1st quarter, the Owls jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead, hitting three of their first five attempts. The Beavers settled into their offense and responded with a 10-3 run to grab a 12-11 lead. Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) scored six points including a three-pointer to help lead the Beavers run. The Owls closed out the quarter strong and took a 19-15 lead after one.

The teams played even for the first 4:30 of the quarter as the Owls still clung on to a five point lead. The Owls got hot over the final 5:30 of the 2nd quarter, going on a 17-0 run to take a 22-point lead into halftime.

The Owls continued their run in the second half, scoring the first 11 points of the half, extending their lead to 33. 

The Beavers were unable to significantly cut into the deficit as the lead hung right around 30 for the remainder of the game. 

Victoria Garand (Portland, Maine) came off the bench and scored a team-high 11 points for the Beavers on 4-6 shooting in just 13 minutes. Jacqui Hamilton (Gorham, Maine) scored nine points off the bench while Mcminis added eight points.

Emily Wheaton scored a game-high 22 points, hitting five threes for the Owls. Kourtney West pitched in with a double-double adding 11 points and 14 rebounds. Alexis Ireland added 14 points for Presque Isle.

UP NEXT

The two teams will play one another in game two of their NAC weekend series tomorrow afternoon with tip-off set for 1 pm.
