PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team took down the University of Maine at Presque Isle 81-74 on Saturday afternoon to complete the two-game weekend sweep of the Owls and improve to 13-7 on the year and 9-1 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play. The Owls drop to 6-12 on the year with a 3-6 record in NAC play.
The Beavers led wire to wire in Saturday' contest. Farmington came out of the gates on fire, quickly building a 22-4 lead in the opening eight minutes and 30 seconds of the contest. The Owls were able to settle in however and went on a quick 7-0 run to draw within 11.Â
A Terion Moss (Portland, Maine) and-one extended the Beavers lead back to 14. The teams exchanged hoops on the next two possessions and then the Owls went on an 8-0 spurt and all of a sudden the Beavers lead was just six. The Beavers did not fold and extended their lead to nine heading into halftime.
Similarly to the 1st half, the Beavers opened up the 2nd half quickly as they extended their lead to 17 just 4:45 into the half. The Beavers led by 60-40 with 9:30 remaining in the game. The Owls once again went on another scoring run, this time a 20-8 run to cut the lead to just 10 with 2:55 left to play.
After the teams traded hoops on the ensuing couple possessions, the Owls continued their run as a KJ Minter layup and Griffin Guerrette three cut the Beaver lead to five with 1:49 left. But the Beavers converted on 9-10 from the free throw line down the stretch to close out the victory and end their weekend on a high note.
Moss scored a team-high 23 points, converting 10-10 from the free throw line, and dishing out five assists. Kyle Donlin (Warren, Maine) added 14 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Jack Kane (Cumberland, Maine) turned in his fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Drew Storey also chipped in with 12 points on 4-6 shooting from the field for the Beavers.
For the Owls, they were led offensively by Dany Harris who scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed six rebounds. Guerrette, Gilbert Jean Mendez, and Minter all scored 12 points for the Owls.
