Beavers Surrender Pair of 2nd Half Goals, Fall in NAC Semifinals to Husson

BANGOR, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington took a 1-0 lead into halftime but surrendered a pair of goals late in the 2nd half, dropping this afternoon's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) semifinal at the hands of Husson University.

Senior forward Cade McHugh (Little Compton, R.I) gave the Beavers a lead early, registering his 6th goal of the season in just the 9th minute. After an Eagles turnover around midfield, Aric Belanger (Manchester, Maine) sent a through ball to Mohamed Adow (Auburn, Maine) who had an Eagle defender on his hip. Adow slowed down, looking to take the ball into the middle of the field. Adow attempted to send a pass into the box for Zach Chaisson (Scarborough, Maine) but his pass hit off a Husson defender and ricocheted to McHugh. McHugh one-timed the bouncing ball into the lower left corner for the game's opening marker.

The Beavers had a strong opportunity to double their lead in the 32nd minute when Brady Stockwell (Manchester, Maine) sent a long, lofting pass toward Chaisson that hopped over an Eagle defender allowing Chaisson to get in alone with Husson goalkeeper Alex Rechsteiner. Chaisson's shot missed just wide, keeping the Beavers' lead at one.

The first half was back and forth, with each team carrying possession but neither team tallying numerous scoring opportunities.

The game began to tilt in Husson's direction in the 2nd half. The Eagles out shot the Beavers 13-3 in the half but Farmington was able to keep Husson off the scoreboard for the opening 27 minutes of the 2nd half.

In the 73rd minute Husson created a 5-3 breakaway as Hugo Llopiz carried the ball down the left wing, drew a Beaver defender and sent a pass to the top of the penalty area that squeaked through a Beaver defender to find it Alejandro Mora who stayed composed and sent a shot to the lower left corner to knot the game up at one.

The game appeared to be destined for overtime as both Rechsteiner and Leach made key saves to keep the game tied. A harmless goal kick from Leach was won just inside the midfield line by Llopiz who headed it on to Florian Gasser who took a pair of touches around a Beaver defender and fired a shot past the diving Leach into the lower right hand corner for the game-winner.

The win sends Husson into the NAC Championship where they will take on SUNY Poly for a chance to earn the NAC's automatic qualifier in the NCAA Division III tournament. The loss signals the end of the season for the Beavers.

Leach made a pair of saves for Farmington while Rechsteiner made just one for Husson.
