CASTLETON, Vermont - The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team fell behind 16-0 in the opening minutes this evening and could not overcome the deficit, dropping game one of the Spartan Classic, 59-42.
The Spartans jumped out to the 16-0 lead in the opening 4:30 of the game. All five of their starters recorded a field goal and forced three Beaver turnovers to grab control of the game early. A three-pointer from Melissa Mayo (Bridgton, Maine) broke the Spartans run and got the Beavers on the scoreboard.
Back-to-back threes from Stasia Epler and Elise Magro extended Castleton's lead to 19 in the first quarter. The Spartans maintained that lead going into the 2nd quarter, holding on 25-6.
After falling behind by 19 in the opening quarter, the Beavers outscored Castleton over the final three quarters, but were unable to overcome the early deficit. The Beavers struggled offensively throughout the game, shooting 18.8% (12-64) from the field for the game and 15.8% (3-19) from beyond the arc.
The Beavers cut the deficit to 14 in the 2nd quarter but were unable to draw any closer. The Beavers had pretty even scoring across the board as five players scored six or more points. Sophomore Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) was the high scorer for the Beavers finishing with eight points. McMinis also added four rebounds. Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) and Jaycie Stevens (Pittston, Maine) each scored seven points while Sarah Poli (Benton, Maine) and Mayo added six points each.
The Spartans were led offensively by Magro who finished with 21 points on 7-19 shooting from the field. Magro also added seven rebounds and five assists. Liz Bailey chipped in with 13 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks while shooting 6-8 from the field.
Castleton shot 31.1% (23-74) from the field and 11.8% (2-17) from three for the game. The Spartans also held a 61-48 advantage on the boards for the game.
