CASTINE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team battled back from an early deficit and was able to pull within two points, but Maine Maritime Academy closed out the 2nd quarter on a 17-0 run and was able to run away from the Beavers in 2nd half en route to claiming the 89-44 victory.
The Mariners offense got rolling early, jumping out to an 19-4 lead after the opening quarter. Erianna Moore and Jasmine Anderson each tallied six points in the opening quarter to help the Mariners open up the early lead.Â
The Beavers responded with a 17-2 run in the opening five minutes of the 2nd quarter to tie the game up at 21 apiece.
Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine),
Sarah Poli (Benton, Maine), and
Maddy White (Waldoboro, Maine) carried the Beavers on the run. Dow scored seven points while Poli added six and White pitched in with four to get the Beavers back into the game. Each of the three hit a big three on the run for the Beavers.Â
Evelyn Dagan and Sydney Briscoe scored 11 of the Mariners next 17 points to help Maine Maritime take a 38-21 lead into halftime.
The Mariners run didn't stop in the 3rd quarter, out scoring the Beavers 33-13 in the quarter to all but put the game away. Dagan's hot shooting continued in the 3rd quarter for the Mariners, hitting three triples in the quarter.Â
The Beavers offense was unable to get anything going beyond the opening five minutes of the 2nd quarter, shooting just 23% (14-61) from the field in the game. Dow scored a game-high 15 points on 6-10 shooting from the field, adding three boards and a pair of steals. Poli chipped in with 15 points of her own and nine boards.Â
The Mariners had four scorers in double figures, led by Dagan 14. Dagan shot 5-10 from the field and 4-8 from beyond the arc. Moore finished with a double-double, posting 11 points and 12 rebounds Makenzie Monzon and Anderson each added 11 points for Maine Maritime.Â
The Mariners shot 47.4% (36-76) from the field for the game and held a steep 61-31 advantage on the boards for the game.
Following the victory the Mariners picked up their 4th win of the season and now sit at 4-3 while the Beavers drop to 2-7.
