Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Beavers Comeback Comes up Short on Senior Day

FARMINGTON, Maine - On Saturday afternoon in Dearborn Gymnasium the University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team got the opportunity to honor their four seniors on senior day against Thomas College. The Beavers ended up dropping the game, 59-48. The defeat marks the end of the season for the Beavers.

Prior to tip-off, Courtney Brent (Gorham, Maine), Victoria Garand (Portland, Maine), Ally O'Brien (Wells, Maine), and Rosalie White (Lisbon, Maine) were all recognized and honored for their contributions to the program over the past four seasons.

Brent, who has missed all of this season, and all but four games from a season ago, drew the honorary start in her last game in a Beaver uniform, taking a backcourt violation before instantly checking out of the ball game.

Despite the energy from the pregame senior ceremony, the game did not start the way the Beavers had envisioned. The Terriers came out of the gates hot, jumping out to a very quick 14-0 lead in the opening 3:17 of the game.

The Terriers clung onto a 20-4 lead until a pair of Garand free throws at the 2:40 mark started a 6-0 Beaver run to end the quarter and bring their deficit to within 10 going into the 2nd quarter.

The teams traded buckets for a majority of the 2nd quarter as the Beavers were unable to draw any closer than within eight points. The Terriers stretched their lead up to as much as 15 in the quarter and took a 12-point lead into halftime.

The Beavers opened up the 2nd half on a quick 7-0 run to cut the deficit to just five. White and Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) each hit layups while Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) drilled a three during the run.

The Terriers responded with a 10-3 run of their own to regain a 12-point lead with three minutes left to play in the quarter.

But the Beavers had a lot of fight in them, battling back with another 7-0 run to close out the quarter. Jacqui Hamilton (Gorham, Maine) hit a pair of layups, including converting an and-one to spark the run for Farmington.

In the 4th quarter, Maddy White (Waldoboro, Maine) drilled a pair of threes on back-to-back possessions to give the Beavers their first lead of the game at 44-43. But the Terriers once again had an answer. This time they responded with an 11-0 run to take a 10-point lead with six minutes left to play.

The Beavers cut the lead back two single-digits on a couple of occasions, but were unable to make the 2nd comeback.

Hamilton scored a team-high 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. Rosalie White chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds. Garand finished with seven points and six boards for the Beavers.

Kristina Perry aced the Terriers with a 17 point, 15 rebound double-double. Elena Alderman added 12 points while Samantha Fortin added 10 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
