Alpine Teams Honor Four Seniors Sunday at Titcomb

FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's and women's alpine teams had the privilege of honoring four senior student-athletes for their contributions to the program over their collegiate career. Christian Beliveau (Auburn, Maine), Simon Spear (Boothbay, Maine), Samantha Hotchkiss (New Durham, N.H.), and Jocelyn Stevens (Stratton, Maine), along with the other senior skiers in the Reynolds Division, received souvenir ski bibs as a token of recognition for their career accomplishments.

With Saturday's giant slalom event that was scheduled to take place at Pleasant Mountain in Bridgton being canceled, Sunday's event turned into both slalom and giant slalom races at Titcomb.

On the men's side, the Beavers claimed 1st place in the giant slalom, squeaking out a win over Saint Joseph's College. The Monks took 1st place in the slalom, beating out the Beavers by a cumulative time of 0.42 seconds.

For the women, the Beavers claimed a pair of 2nd place finishes. In giant slalom, the Beavers were only 0.34 seconds behind the Monks for 1st. The Beavers had a cumulative time of 1.1 seconds behind the Monks in slalom.

Men's Races

In giant slalom, Spear, Lake Lindelof (Belfast, Maine), and Sam Roy (Frenchville, Maine) combined for a cumulative two-run time of 2:39.51 to beat out the Monks. The Beavers totaled 10 place points to the Monks 11. 

Following the first runs, the Beavers were 0.7 seconds behind the Monks. Spear, Lindelof, and Roy each trimmed time off in their second runs to pass St. Joe's and clinch 1st place. 

Spear finished his 1st run in 26.58 seconds, good for 2nd place after the 1st run. Spear then flew down the mountain in his 2nd run, finishing in 25.82 seconds, trimming 0.74 seconds from his time. Lindelof trimmed 0.20 seconds in his 2nd run to finish his two runs with a cumulative time of 53.34 seconds. Roy cut 0.17 seconds off his time in his 2nd run to finish with a cumulative time of 53.77. 

Spear finished in 2nd place with a 52.40 second time. Lindelof joined him on the podium with a 3rd place finish. Roy came in 5th place overall. Beliveau also finished inside the top-10 for the Beavers with a cumulative time of 54.39 seconds. 

In slalom, the Beavers finished with a three-man cumulative time of 3:29.04 in their 2nd place effort. Spear took 1st place individually on the podium with a two-run time of 1:08.62. 

Colgan O'Keefe (Westchester, N.Y.) narrowly missed the podium, finishing in 4th place with a time of 1:09.92, 0.12 seconds from 3rd place. 

Gavin Crowley (Southington, Conn.) was the 3rd Beaver contributing to their team's time with a 6th place finish in 1:10.49.

The Beavers grabbed 11 place points while the Monks notched 10.

Women's Races

In giant slalom, the Beavers had four skiers finish with a two-run time of under one minute. Grace Mahmood (Oxford, Conn.), Tegan Andrew (Goffstown, N.H.), and Lauren Kessen (Sussex, Wisc.) were the three scoring skiers while Fallon Smith (Nelson, N.H.) also finished in under a minute.

Mahmood finished in 3rd place overall, racing to a two-run time of 58.26 seconds. Andrew finished behind her in 4th place with a cumulative time of 58.58 seconds. Kessen was not far behind in 5th place with a 58.75 second finish. The three combined for a time of 2:55.59 and 12 place points.

Smith finished in 7th place overall with a total time of 59.65. Hokulani Caroselli also finished inside the top-10 with a two run time of 1:00.22.

In their final giant slalom race at Titcomb, Hotchkiss and Stevens finished in 14th and 15th place respectively. Hotchkiss finished her two runs in 1:03.02 while Stevens finished with a 1:03.17 time.

In slalom, Caroselli, Kessen, and Mahmood combined for a time of 3:56.92 to place in 2nd place with 13 place points.

Caroselli placed on the podium with a 3rd place finish. She posted a two-run time of 1:17.75 seconds, just 0.35 seconds behind 2nd place. Kessen finished in 4th place with a time of 1:18.51. Mahmood was 6th with a total time of 1:20.66. Smith also finished inside the top-10 with a 9th place finish in 1:22.78.

Hotchkiss and Stevens finished in 12th and 13th place overall with times of 1:24.34 and 1:25.92 respectively.

UP NEXT

The Beavers will compete in a Reynolds Division giant slalom race next Saturday morning at Sugarloaf.
