Beavers Drop Season Opener on the Road to the Amcats

PAXTON, Mass. - The University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team dropped their season opener this afternoon at the hands of the Anna Maria Amcats 11-10.

Senior Kaya Backman (South Portland, Maine) got things started early notching her 1st goal of the season just 2:40 into the game. Freshman Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) notched her 1st collegiate goal just 19 seconds later to make it 2-0. The Amcats scored three straight to end the 1st quarter on a pair of goals from Riley Cote and a goal from Lydia Rosen.

Ashlee Farrar (South Paris, Maine) picked up her 1st collegiate goal 1:13 into the 2nd quarter to tie the game up at three. McMinis found the back of the net once again at 10:13 of the 2nd quarter to help the Beavers regain the lead.

The Amcats once again scored three unanswered as Alice Yokabaskas, Kyana Altif, and Cote notched goals to put Anna Maria up 6-4 a minute into the 3rd quarter. But the Beavers would respond as Abby Trefsger (South Portland, Maine) cut the deficit in half with an unassisted marker. Raegan Hachey scored a goal just 1:50 later to give the Amcats a two goal lead once again.

A goal from Emma Bourget (Gardiner, Maine) and the hat-trick tally from McMinis tied the game back up at 7 going into the 4th quarter.

Raegan Hachey scored the next goal to give the Amcats an 8-7 lead. Trefsger responded with her 2nd goal of the game to re-tie the game. Backman gave the Beavers a lead three minutes later with an unassisted tally at 6:09 of the 4th quarter. But the Amcats once again has an answer, scoring three goals in 50 seconds to take an 11-9 lead with 2:27 left to play.

Trefsger notched her 3rd goal of the game with 1:52 to play, but the Beavers were unable to find the tying tally.

Trefsger and McMinis each had three goals on the day. Mcminis also finished with a pair of assists to lead the Beavers. Kate Nowell (York, Maine) made eight saves in net for Farmington. Emily Stinson (Alfred, Maine) recorded a team high eight ground balls. 

The Beavers held a 32-25 advantage in shots, a 45-40 advantage in ground balls, and were successful on 16-24 clear attempts.

UP NEXT 

The Beavers will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Fitchburg State for a 6 PM game.
