Beavers Fall to Cardinals and Owls in Doubleheader

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The University of Maine at Farmington softball team dropped both legs of their doubleheader on Wednesday, dropping game one 16-3 to Plattsburgh State and 13-3 in game two to Keene State.

Game One

A big 4th inning proved to be the difference in game one as the Cardinals scored 11 to break things open en route to the 16-3 victory. Plattsburgh opened the scoring in the 1st inning, tallying two runs on three hits. The Cardinals had scored a two and still had the bases loaded with nobody out. Carleigh Schievink bared down, striking out Michelle Gonzales and getting Danielle Torres to bounce into an inning ending double play.

The Beavers cut into the deficit, getting a run back in the bottom half of the 1st. Bella Miller (Lewiston, Maine) led off with a single and moved up to 2nd on a SAC bunt from Kiley Merritt (Lisbon Falls, Maine). Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) followed with a big RBI double to make it a 2-1 lead.

Kristen Langdon tallied an RBI single in the top of the 2nd to help the Cardinals regain a two-run lead.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Merritt led off with a single and Pike followed with a single of her own to give the Beavers 1st and 2nd with nobody out. Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine) flew out to center but Megan Wilson (Belgrade, Maine) knocked a single to center field to drive in Merritt and once again make it a one-run game.

The top of the 4th inning did not go the Beavers way. They surrendered 11 runs on 10 hits as the Cardinals broke the game open. The Cardinals added two more in the top of the 5th.

Wilson picked up another RBI knock in the bottom of the 5th to make it a 16-3 game.

Pike and Wilson were each 2-3 on the day to lead the Beavers. Katie Hammer (Ellsworth, Maine) also added a hit.

Claire Palmer and Julia Golino each tallied three hits for Plattsburgh

Game Two

As the visitor's, Keene State took an early lead in the top of the 1st. The first four batters of the game reached base to take a 3-0 lead. With two runners on, Hayley Townsend sent a double down the right field line that scored a pair and extended the Owls lead to 5-0.

The Owls kept rolling in the top of the 2nd inning. Sara Cote and Molly Murray hit back-to-back singles to open the inning. They moved up to 2nd and 3rd on a SAC bunt and chased home on a two-RBI triple by Mia Ferry. Allison Adams followed up with a single that plated Ferry to make it an 8-0 game.

The Owls tallied another run in the top of the 3rd.

The Beavers got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 3rd. Mackenzie Dyer (Gray, Maine) led off the inning with a single and Katie Hammer (Ellsworth, Maine) followed with a single of her own to give the Beaver 1st and 2nd with nobody out. Pike ripped a single to right center driving in Hammer, making it a 9-1 game.

The Owls added two runs on four hits in the top of the 4th inning. Grace Hallett delivered an RBI double as part of the Owls rally. In the 5th, the Owls pushed two more runs across making it a 13-1 game heading to the bottom of the 5th.

In the bottom of the 5th, Dyer once again led off with a single. With two outs, Isabella LaFrance (Union, Maine) roped an RBI double to right center. Pike followed with her own RBI double to make it 13-3.
