Beavers Finish Their Florida Trip With a Split Against Colby-Sawyer

DAVENPORT, Fla. - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team split their doubleheader on Thursday against Colby-Sawyer to finish off their Florida trip at 3-7. The Beavers scored a season-high 16 runs en route to a 16-7 win in game one. The bats went quiet in game two, falling 3-0 to the Chargers.

Game One

After a scoreless 1st and 2nd innings, the Chargers got on the board, scoring three runs in the bottom of the 3rd. The Chargers had five consecutive hitter reach base as Cam Carignan and Devin Montalvo delivered RBI knocks and Max Lewis hit a SAC fly to make it 3-0 heading into the 4th inning. 

The Beavers got a pair of runs back in the top of the 4th. Hunter LaBossiere (Oxford, Maine) hit a one-out single and Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) walked to give the Beavers 1st and 2nd with Will Cauchon (Kingston, Mass.) coming to the plate. Cauchon delivered with an RBI single to center that scored LaBossiere and moved Sargent over to 3rd. Tyler Lambert (Lyman, Maine) followed with a single to right center that scored Sargent to bring the Beavers within a run. 

The Chargers got both runs back in the bottom of the 4th when Montalvo delivered a two-RBI triple to left center to make it 5-2.

The Beavers had a huge 5th inning, scoring five runs on three hits to grab a 7-5 lead. Sam Peterson (South Berwick, Maine) led off with a walk, Danny Terune (South Burlington, Vermont) followed with a single, and Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) walked to load the bases with no outs. Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) delivered a clutch bases-clearing triple to tie the game at five. After a Sargent intentional walk, Cauchon gave the Beavers a 7-5 lead with a huge two-RBI double down the right field line. 

The Chargers re-tied the game in the bottom of the 5th. Lewis led off with a double and then scored when Cooper O'Brien replaced him with a double of his own. O'Briend then scored on a single from Ben Brennan.

Farmington regained the lead in the top of the 6th inning. Terhune led off with a single, Pruett walked, and Coombs was hit by a pitch to load the bases once again with nobody out. Pruett came around to score on an error that gave the Beaver the lead for good. Sargent delivered a SAC fly to give the Beavers a 9-7 lead.

The Beavers put the game away in the top of the 7th inning, plating seven to take a 16-7 lead. Lambert, Peterson, Coombs, LaBossiere, Sargent, and Cauchon all recorded hits in the inning for the Beavers. 

Coombs, Cauchon, and Terhune each had three hits to lead the Beavers. Coombs added four RBIs while Cauchon tallied three.

Chris Albert (Bradley, Maine) recorded his 1st win of the season pitching three innings of scoreless relief.

Game Two

The 2nd game of the doubleheader was a pitcher's duel. Will Harriman (Biddeford, Maine) went six innings, scattering five hits, striking out five. He gave up just one run, but it was unearned to pick up the tough loss. 

After four scoreless innings, Dylan Watson broke to tie with an RBI single Janai Cruz reached on an error. 

The Beavers had 1st and 2nd with one out in the bottom of the 6th after a Coombs single and a walk from Sargent. Coombs was stealing 3rd when Cauchon got called for batter's interference for the 2nd out of the inning and sent Coombs back to 2nd base. Peterson grounded out to short to end the threat. 

The Chargers tallied a pair of insurance runs in the top of the 7th. Ian Turpel led off with a double and moved over to 3rd on a SAC bunt. Jared Schmitt delivered an RBI bunt single to score Turpel. He came around to score on a single from Montalvo to make it 3-0 Colby-Sawyer. 

The Beavers went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 7th as Zach Rogers finished off the complete game shutout for the Chargers. Roger pitched to contact all game, going all seven innings recording just two strikeouts but only surrendered two hits and two walks.

Coombs and Peterson had the hits for the Beavers. Montalvo and Turpel each had a pair of hits for the Chargers.
