3rd Quarter Surge Leads Mariners Past Beavers

CASTINE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team dropped a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) on the road this evening to Maine Maritime Academy, 21-9. The game was originally scheduled to be played last week in Farmington but due to unplayable field conditions the game got moved to Castine.

The 1st half was a highly competitive and back forth battle that saw five lead changes and six ties. The Mariners got on the board 1st as Amber Card found the back of the net off from a feed from Rebecca Caron 1:37 into the game. The Beavers didn't wait long to answer as freshman Ashlee Farrar (South Paris, Maine) scored an unassisted goal to knot the game at one 1:21 later.

After a Kirra Magaa goal made it 2-1 Mariners, Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) re-tied the game just two minutes later. The Beavers grabbed their 1st lead of the game at the 6:36 mark of the 1st quarter when Kaya Backman (South Portland, Maine) tallied her 8th goal of the season.

The Mariners scored two quick goals in the final 1:08 of the 1st quarter to take 4-3 lead into the 2nd quarter.

McMinis wasted no time to tie the game back up, scoring her 2nd goal of the game just 35 seconds into the 2nd quarter. But Maine Maritime regained the lead 24 seconds later when Caron grabbed her 1st goal of the game.

Consecutive goals from Backman and Emma Bourget (Gardiner, Maine) gave the Beavers a lead once again with eight minutes left to play in the half. Hazel Stoddard and Caron picked up goals in the final three minutes to help the Mariners take a 7-6 lead into halftime. The goals from Stoddard and Caron began a run of nine consecutive goals for the Mariners to break the game open at 14-6.

Emma Brown (Naples, Maine) tallied her 1st goal of the game to stop the run for the Mariners. The Mariners responded with four of the next five goals to make it 18-8 going into the 4th quarter. Backman picked up her 3rd goal of the game for the hat-trick late in the 3rd quarter off a feed from Lydia Eastman (Chelsea, Vermont).

Brown picked up a man-up goal to open up the 4th quarter. But the Mariners tallied the final three goals of the game to make it 21-9 in their winning effort.
