STANDISH, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington softball team dropped both ends of their doubleheader on Wednesday, 15-1 and 7-4, at the hands of Saint Joseph's College.
Game One
The Monks used a big 2nd inning to pull away from the Beavers, scoring 11 runs in the 2nd inning en route to the 15-1 victory.
Sylvia Foley got the Monks on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 1st inning, delivering an RBI single into right field.Â
St. Joe's tallied 11 runs in the 2nd on seven hits, including just one extra base hit in the inning. Charlotte Cloutier went 2-2 in the inning with three RBIs, Sadie Tirrell delivered a two-RBI triple while recording three overall for the inning. Lydia Goodnough, Olivia Howe, and Hannah Gosselin also recorded RBIs in the inning for the Monks.
St. Joe's picked up three more runs in the bottom of the 3rd as Mia Northrup and Abbie Green-Sermak picked up RBIs.
Olivia Paradis (Saco, Maine) picked up the 1st hit of the game for the Beavers when she wrapped a single into left field in the top of the 2nd inning.Â
The Beavers got on the scoreboard in the top of the 5th inning. Katie Hammer (Ellsworth, Maine) ripped a one-out single and advanced to 2nd on a single from Bella Miller (Lewiston, Maine). Hammer came into score when Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) reached on an error.
Game TwoÂ
The Monks offense started quickly in game two, opening up a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning. Howe picked up an RBI double to start the scoring. Rylee Page picked up an RBI on a groundout to bring in the 2nd run for St. Joe's. Abby Carpenter delivered an RBI single and Emily Eagleston followed with an RBI triple and later scored on an error.
The Monks made it 7-0 in the bottom of the 2nd, tacking on a pair of runs on RBIs from Howe and Foley.
The Beavers battled back, scoring four runs in the top of the 5th inning to pull within three. Carleigh Schievink (Charlestown, Mass.) led off the inning with a walk and Paradis was hit by a pitch to give the Beavers 1st and 2nd with nobody out. Chelsea Davis (New Gloucester, Maine) then reached on an error that allowed Schievink to score. Miller drew a one-out walk to reload the bases. Pike then crushed a double to right field to clear the bases and make it a 7-4 game but could not draw any closer.
Schievink pitched five innings of scoreless relief for the Beavers while giving up just two hits and striking out two. Pike and Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine) each went 1-3 to lead the Beavers offensively.Â
Sydney Hatch pitched the first four innings giving up no runs to pick up the win. Gosselin went 3-4 with a pair of runs scored, and Howe was 2-2 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead the Monks.

The Beavers take on the University of Southern Maine tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader with game one scheduled for 4 PM.
