LYNDONVILLE, Vermont - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team dropped both ends of Sunday's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader at the hands of Northern Vermont-Lyndon. The Beavers fell in game one 9-8 and 5-1 in game two.
Game One
After falling twice to the Hornets on Saturday, the Beavers came out of the gates hungry, getting their offense rolling early. The Beavers put up four in the top of the 2nd inning to open up a 4-0 lead. Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) led off with a walk and Will Cauchon (Kingston, Maine) ripped a one-out single to left to give the Beavers runners on 1st and 2nd. Derek Gendreau (Hampden, Maine) followed with a big double to left field to score Coombs and get the Beavers on the board. Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) then recorded an RBI on an infield single and the Beavers still had runners on the corners. Following a SAC bunt from Danny Terhune (South Burlington, Vermont) moved Pruett into scoring position, Gendreau and Pruett came into score when LaBossiere reached on an error.
The Hornets cut the Beavers lead in half in the bottom of the 3rd inning on an RBI double from TJ Santaw and a SAC fly from Dylan Wilson.
In the bottom of the 5th inning, Wilso hit a two-run home run to tie the game up at four.
The Beavers quickly responded with three runs in the top of the 6th to regain the lead. Coombs delivered a one-out bases loaded two-RBI single to give the Beavers a 6-4 lead. Cauchon delivered a clutch two-out single to center to score Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) from 2nd base.
The Hornets scored five runs, four of which were unearned, with two outs in the bottom of the 6th inning to take a 9-7 lead. Steven Friscia hit a one-out double to left field and Will Harriman (Biddeford, Maine) got EJ Camden to fly out to center field to record the 2nd out of the inning. After an RBI single from Dalton Berry made it 7-5, Santaw reached on an error to keep the inning alive. Dale Ostermann reached on an infield single to load the bases. Wilson delivered his 2nd home run of the game, this one a grand slam to give the Hornets the lead.
Gendreau led off the top of the 7th with his 1st career home run to cut the Lyndon lead to just one. But the Beavers were unable to draw any closer.
Harriman went six innings for the Beavers, scattering 11 hits while giving up nine runs (four earned) and striking out five. Cauchon went 3-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Gendreau finished 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Juan Subervi (Lynn, Mass) and Bloch each added two hits.
Nathan Bigelow went the first five innings giving up four runs (two earned), giving up eight hits and striking out six, but did not factor into the decision. Osterman picked up the win in relief, pitching the final 1.2 innings, giving up one run while striking out three. Wilson led the Hornets on offense finishing 3-3 with two home runs and seven RBIs.
Game Two
Gendreau continued his hot day at the plate in the top of the 1st inning of game two, delivering an RBI single to center field to score Bloch. Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) was cut down trying to score on the play.
The Hornets tied the game up in the bottom of the 2nd inning as Friscia led off with a double and later scored on a SAC fly from Berry.
Friscia kept it rolling in the bottom of the 3rd inning, ripping an RBI double to left to put the Hornets on top.
Berry and Santaw led off the bottom of the 4th inning with back-to-back singles. Berry scored on a SAC fly from Ostermann. Santaw scored on a ground out from Wilson to make it 4-1.
The Beavers looked to have something going in the top of the 5th when Cal Tibbitts (Bath, Maine) led off with a single to right and Terhune delivered a one-out single to center to give Farmington runners on 1st and 2nd with just one out. But an inning ending double play put an end to the Beavers rally.
The Hornets tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th as Santaw led off with a triple and came into score on an RBI from Ostermann.
The Beavers tried to rally in the top of the 7th inning, loading the bases with two outs and bringing the tying run to the plate. But Lyndon closer Alberto Bustamante got Bloch to strikeout swinging to end the game.
Bloch pitched the first four innings, giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out three. TJ Dorn (Westbrook, Maine) pitched two innings in relief, giving up just one run on one hit while recording one strikeout. Terhune went 2-3 to lead the Beavers.
Ostermann started game two after closing out game one, going five innings giving up just one run on six hits. Santaw, Parades, and Friscia each picked up two hits for the Hornets.

The Beavers host the University of Maine at Presque Isle in another NAC doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. Game one's 1st pitch is scheduled for 1 PM.
