Dudley, Mass. - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on the road this afternoon to Nichols College. The Bison topped the Beavers 7-2 in game one and 15-2 in game two.
Game One
After a scoreless two and a half innings, the Bison got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Andrew Croteau led off the inning with a single and moved up to 2nd on a single from Johnny Knox. Croteau and Knox stole 2nd and 3rd to give the Bison a pair of runners in scoring position with one out. Luis Vargas executed a squeeze bunt allowing Croteau to score and give Nichols a 1-0 lead.
The Beavers tied the game in the top of the 4th when Hunter LaBossiere (Oxford, Maine) crossed the plate on a wild pitch. LaBossiere reached on an error to open up the inning before moving over to 3rd on a single from Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine). Will Cauchon (Kingston, Mass.) walked later in the inning as the Beavers had runners on the corners with only one out. Nichols starting pitcher Jack Kabel worked out of trouble to keep the game tied.
Nichols put up four runs in the bottom of the 4th to open the game up. Knox delivered a two-RBI double with the bases to break the tie. Brennan Hyde followed with a two-RBI single to make it a 5-1 game.
The Bison tacked on a pair of runs in the 5th to extend their lead to 7-1.
Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) picked up his 1st collegiate hit and RBI, driving in Cauchon in the top of the 6th.
The Beavers got runners into scoring position in each of the 7th, 8th, and 9th but were unable to push any more runs across.
Will Harriman (Biddeford, Maine) drew the start giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits while striking out three in 3.2 innings. Aaron Goschke (Gorham, Maine) pitched the final 4.1 innings in relief giving up a pair of runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out five. Sargent recorded a pair hit to lead the Beavers on offense.
For the Bison, Knox went 4-4 with two RBIs, a run scored, and a walk. Kabel pitched six innings giving up just two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out 11 to pick up the win.
Game Two
The Bison got their offense started early, piling up four runs in the opening inning. Knox continued his great day, blasting a two-run homerun in the inning. Jim Marasco put one over the fence in the 3rd to extend the Bison lead to 5-0.
The Beavers hung tough, pushing two across in the top of the 5th inning on a single to center field from LaBossiere that scored Cal Tibbitts (Bath, Maine) and Danny Terhun (South Burlington, Vermont).
The Bison offense kept rolling in the middle innings, scoring five in the 5th, two in the 6th, and two in the 7th. Brad Ellis delivered a big blow in the 5th when ripped a three-run homerun to right center field.
Terhune tallied a pair of hits and Callister Montembeau (Kennebunk, Maine) recorded his 1st hit of the season for the Beavers.
Marasco went 4-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Bison. Karl Miller also picked up three hits and scored four runs.
