Beavers Earn Doubleheader Sweep of Badgers

FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington softball team earned a pair of big wins on Friday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader at home against the Northern Vermont-Johnson Badgers. The Beavers took game one, 3-1 before grabbing game two, 9-3.

Game One

The Beavers cracked the scoreboard first with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 1st from Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine) to drive in Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) who doubled.

Pike crushed her 2nd home run of the season to straight away left field to double the Beavers lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning.

The Badgers were able to cut the Beavers lead in half in the top of the 4th. Brianna Belisle led off the inning with a single to left center and came into score on a two-out RBI double from Jennavieve Rapoza.

The Beavers tacked on an important insurance run in the bottom of the 6th inning. Chelsea Davis (Gray, Maine) ripped a one-out single up the middle and moved over to 3rd on an error. Taylor Veilleux (Belgrade, Maine) delivered a SAC fly to right field to score Davis.

Carliegh Schievink (Charlestown, Mass.) and Grace Martin (Marblehead, Mass.) combined to give up just one run on four hits. Schievink went the first four innings, giving up four hits and one run while striking out two to pick up the win. Martin pitched three perfect innings of relief, striking out one to pick up her 1st collegiate save. Pike led the Beavers at the plate with two hits, two runs, and an RBI.

Alexis Fleischer picked up the loss, tossing six innings giving up two earned on five hits while striking out six.

Game Two

The Beavers responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the 1st. The Beavers quickly loaded the bases and Allen unloaded them with a bases clearing double to right field. Mack Dyer (Hancock, Maine) delivered a one-out double to left, scoring Allen.

Consecutive singles from Belisle, Claude, and Rapoza generated a run for the Badgers to make it 4-3 in the 3rd inning.

The Beavers were able to break the game open in the bottom of the 5th. Allen drew a one-out walk and was pinch run for by Brianna Benson (Woodcock, Maine). Olivia Paradis (Saco, Maine) followed with an RBI double to left center to make it a 5-3 game. After a Dyer single and Schievink walk to load the bases, Veilleux hit a ball to 3rd base that was thrown away trying to cut down Paradis at the plate. Paradis and Dyer both came into score on the play to give the Beavers a 7-3 lead.
