Beavers Open Conference Play with a Pair of Losses to Thomas

WATERVILLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington softball team dropped both ends of a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader played at Colby College on Saturday afternoon. The Beavers fell in game one 7-0 before dropping game two 18-4.

Game One

The Terriers got on the board early in the top of the 1st inning. Kelsey Currier ripped a one out triple down the left field line and scored on an RBI single from Maddie Rock.

The Terriers doubled their lead in the top of the 3rd inning when Currier once again tripled, this time with two outs. Rock reached on an error that allowed Currier to score and make it a 2-0 lead for Thomas.

Bella Miller (Lewiston, Maine) picked up the 1st hit of the game for the Beavers in the bottom of the 3rd, doubling down the left field line.

Thomas played some small ball in the 4th inning to push the 3rd run across. Kayla Duhaime walked to lead off the inning and advanced to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt. She then came into score a SAC fly from Makayla Panich.

Thomas tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the 5th inning. Megan Oberholzer singled to lead off the inning and came around to score on a triple from Duhaime. Duhaime scored on an RBI groundout from Katy McIntyre.

The Terriers added a pair of runs again in the 7th inning. Currier tripled for the 3rd time in the game to drive in Cheyenne Simpson, who singled to lead off the inning. Currier came into score on another RBI groundout from Rock to make it 7-0.

Currier also pitched all seven innings for the Terriers, surrendering just two hits and two walks while striking out eight to record the shutout.

Carleigh Schievink (Charlestown, Mass.) pitched all seven innings, giving up five earned runs and striking out a pair. Miller went 1-3 while Megan Wilson (Belgrade, Maine) went 1-2 with a walk.

Game Two

The Terriers got their offense started early, scoring 11 runs in the top of the 1st. Kaylee Fonseca notched a two-RBI double, Rock added a three-RBI double, and Riley Giblin added an RBI-double to highlight the inning for the Terriers. 

Thomas scored a pair of runs in each of the 2nd and 3rd innings, while tallying three more in the 4th. Panich picked up an RBI double in the 2nd. Giblin added another RBI double in the 3rd. Shannon Harris and Jordan Devine each picked up RBI doubles in the 4th for Thomas.

The Beavers trailed 18-0 going into the bottom of the 5th where they battled to push four runs across the plate. 

Taylor Truman (Monmouth, Maine) led off with a walk. Chelsea Davis (New Gloucester, Maine) was hit by a pitch to make it 1st and 2nd for the Beavers with one out. Truman came into score on an error. Miller laced a single to center to score Davis. Kiley Merritt (Lisbon Falls, Maine) grounded out to score Katie Hammer (Ellsworth, Maine). Miller scored later in the inning on another error to make it 18-4.

Oberholtzer went 3-3 with two RBIs, Rock was 2-2 with three RBIs, Giblin finished 2-4 with a pair of RBIs and Lindsay Eisenhart finished 2-3 with two RBIs for the Terriers. 

Miller went 1-3 with and RBI while Wilson was 1-2 for Farmington.

UP NEXT

The Beavers are scheduled to host St. Joe's on Wednesday. Game one's 1st pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
