Beavers Use Five Unanswered Goals to Take Down Owls, Pick up 1st Win of the Season

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - After conceding a goal in the opening moments of Wednesday afternoon's game, the University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team scored five unanswered goals while playing down a man to top the University of Maine at Presque Isle, 5-1. The win for the Beavers moves them to 1-2 on the season.

The opening minutes of the game did not go the way the Beavers wanted. After a misplay on the backline let the Owls get in behind Beavers goalkeeper Jack Wormald (Salisbury, N.H.) and in alone with senior defender Trevor Krueger, a shot by the Owls was met by an intentional handball by Krueger prompting a penalty kick and a red card that would leave the Beavers down a man for the remainder of the contest. Remar Shirley executed the penalty kick and gave the Owls a 1-0 lead in just the 6th minute.

The Beavers wasted no time finding the tying goal. Senior Cade McHugh (Little Compton, R.I.) took a throw-in deep in the Owls defensive territory. McHugh's throw skimmed off the head of an Owl defender right to senior midfielder Aric Belanger (Manchester, Maine) who launched a half-volley over the head of Owl goalkeeper Xavier McAtee to tie the game up at one in the 8th minute.

Senior midfielder Christian Beliveau (Auburn, Maine) picked up his 2nd goal of the season on a beautiful left-footed strike in the 19th minute off an assist from William Dowse (Sherborn, Mass.) to give the Beavers a 2-1 lead.

Junior transfer Caleb Kolman (Bixby, Okla.) added to the Farmington lead in the 41st minute, cleaning up a Mohamed Adow (Auburn, Maine) rebound to pick up his first goal as a Beaver and help take a 3-1 lead into halftime.

The Beavers weren't done scoring as the 2nd half got underway. First-year Oscar Davis (Scarborough, Maine) sniped the bottom left corner of the goal, beating the diving McAtee in the 59th minute off a beautiful thru-ball from Adow to give UMF a 4-1 lead.

McHugh picked up a goal of his own in the 76th minute, converting a penalty kick to give the Beavers a 5-1 advantage. McHugh finished with a goal and an assist to pace the Beavers on offense.

Wormald and first-year Jackson Leach (Farmingdale, Maine) combined to make three saves in goal for the Beavers. McAtee made three saves for the Owls.

The Beavers held advantages in shots (12-11), shots on goal (8-5), and corner kicks (6-1).
