Beavers Fall in Round One at UMPI

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Presque Isle used a big 2nd half to take round one of the Friday-Saturday doubleheader with the University of Maine at Farmington, 77-68.

The Beavers controlled the play for the majority of the 1st half, leading by as much as 11 and took a 40-34 lead into halftime. The Beavers got off to a quick start, scoring the first seven points of the game.

Jordan Anthony (Farmington, Conn.) and Simon Chadbourne (Portland, Maine) carried much of the heavy lifting on offense for the Beavers in the opening half, combining for 25 of the Beavers 40 points. Anthony scored 12 points and Chadbourne had 13, knocking down three triples.

The Beavers continued to grow their lead in the opening minutes of the 2nd half. Chadbourne drilled his fourth three of the game on the opening possession of the half and Anthony drilled a three on the following possession, extending the Beaver lead to ten.

The Beavers clung to a 49-37 lead with 18 minutes to play when Doug McCalla took control of the game helping lead the Owls on a 14-0 run to grab a two-point lead. McCalla scored seven of the 14 points on the run, including a big momentum shifting three.

Farmington took the punch in the mouth with stride, responding with a 10-4 run of their own to regain a four-point lead. But that was the last lead that the Beavers had. A Dany Harris layup tied the game up a 59 and then a pair of free throws from Gilbert Jean Mendez gave the Owls the lead for good with 8:55 to play.

The Owls were able to get into the lane with ease in the 2nd half, scoring 28 points in the paint in the 2nd half. UMPI led by as much as 11 in the closing minutes en route to picking up the important North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory.
