Beavers Drop Back and Forth Battle with Owls

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team was unable to get past the University of Maine at Presque for the second time in two days, dropping Saturday afternoon's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest, 55-52 to the Owls.

The Beavers came out of the gate on fire, jumping out to a 17-8 lead in the first six minutes of the game. Senior captain Jaycie Stevens (Pittston, Maine) canned a pair of threes to open the game, helping the Beavers grab the early lead.

Despite starting the game so hot, the Beavers quickly cooled off and were held scoreless for the subsequent nine minutes of game time until Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) hit a layup to put and end to the scoreless drought.

After the Beavers grabbed the 17-8 lead, the Owls responded by going on an 18-2 run to take a 26-19 lead with 2:56 left to play in the opening half. Alexis Ireland scored nine of the Owls 18 points on the run.

Back-to-back threes from Stevens and Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) cut the Beavers' deficit to one. After both teams were held scoreless for two minutes late in the 1st half, Emily Wheaton went coast to coast for a layup in the final seconds of the half to put the Owls up 28-25 at halftime.

Consecutive layups from Sarah Poli (Benton, Maine) and Dow to open up the 3rd quarter helped Farmington regain a one-point lead. After the teams traded buckets, with the score tied at 32, back-to-back three-point plays from Ireland and Olivia Gray gave the Owls a six-point lead. A couple of possessions later Lauren Magno drilled a three from the top of the key to extend UMPI's lead to nine as the Owls had momentum securely in their favor.

Dow took control of the game to close out the quarter for the Beavers. She scored or assisted on the Beavers final eight points of the quarter to bring Farmington back within three heading into the 4th quarter.

After the Beavers fought to pull within one possession, the Owls once again went on a run, opening the 4th quarter on a 6-0 scoring spurt to take another nine-point advantage.

Farmington had an answer once again as Stevens hit her fourth three of the ballgame and Dow hit a layup to pull the Beavers back within four.

Consecutive buckets from Aleia Milano and Gray extended the Owls' lead back up to eight with 4:23 to play but the Beavers weren't done yet. Jacqui Hamilton (Gorham, Maine) hit a pair of free throws, Dow drilled a three in transition, and Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) hit a layup off a feed from Poli to pull back within a point with a minute and a half to play.

The Beavers forced a pair of Owl turnovers down the stretch but were unable to turn them into points at the other end and Wheaton hit a pair of free throws late to seal the victory for UMPI.
