Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Mariners Top Beavers in NAC Battle

CASTINE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team was unable to keep pace with Maine Maritime Academy on a blustery Saturday afternoon in a critical North Atlantic Conference (NAC) battle.

The Records:

Both teams exited play today with almost identical records as the Beavers are now 5-5-2 with a 4-3 record in NAC play and the Mariners improved to 5-5-1 with a 4-3 record in conference play following today's win.

How it Happened:

Saturday afternoon's contest was a midfield possession battle for a majority of the contest but the Mariners were able to generate a couple of quality scoring opportunities that they made the most of en route to the victory.

Gabriel Toledo got the hosts on the scoreboard in the 19th minute of the game, finding the back of the net off a feed from James Baur.

The Beavers had a couple of opportunities to tie the game up just minutes later but Reagan Moynihan made a sound save on a Mohamed Adow (Auburn, Maine) shot. Caleb Kolman (Bixby, Okla.) had a shot blocked and the Beavers were unable to score on a corner kick as the Mariners continued to cling to a one goal advantage.

The Mariners hung onto a one goal advantage to open the 2nd half. William Dowse (Sherborn, Mass.) was whistled for a foul in the Beavers' own penalty box in the 55th minute leading to a penalty kick for Maine Maritime. Toledo took the kick for the Mariners and slid a shot past Leach to make it a 2-0 game.

Less than three minutes later Baur found the net himself, extending the Mariners lead to 3-0 and that was all they would need, cruising to their 5th victory of the season.

Team Stats:

The Beavers held a slight 9-7 advantage in shots as well as corner kicks (9-7) while the Mariners held a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.

The Goalkeepers:

Sophomore goalkeeper Jackson Leach (Farmingdale, Maine) made one save in the loss for Farmington. Moynihan made three saves to pick up the shutout victory.
