Late Goal Downs Beavers

CASTINE, Maine - Sophia Hernandez scored a goal in the final 20 minutes of game time to help lead Maine Maritime Academy to a win at home over the University of Maine at Farmington in an important North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Records:

Following the loss Saturday, the Beavers dropped to 5-6-2 overall with a 2-3-2 record in NAC play. The Mariners improved to 5-4-2 with a 4-2-1 record in NAC play.

How it Happened:

The first half saw some back and forth action as the two teams fought for possession. The Beavers generated the best sustained scoring opportunities out of either team in the opening half.

Natalie Tracy (Oakland, Maine) fired a low shot on frame that forced Isa Thesing to make a strong save. Following the save by Thesing, the Beavers recorded a string of three straight corner kicks but were unable to generate a shot attempt as the team's stayed scoreless into halftime.

The Mariners came out of halftime with a new sense of energy. Maine Maritime generated three shots and two corner kicks in the opening two minutes and 42 seconds of the half. Junior Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine) withstood the pressure and kept the Mariners off the scoreboard to keep the game knotted up at 0.

The Mariners were able to crack the scoreboard in the 72nd minute. Emma White fired a shot on net that Gonya made the initial save on. Gonya was unable to corral the rebound as it dropped right to the foot of Hernandez who slipped a shot into the back of the net for the game-winner.

The Beavers were unable to mount a response as the Mariners picked up the NAC victory.

Team Stats:

The Mariners held a 14-6 advantage in shots, including a 9-3 advantage in shots in the 2nd half alone. Maine Maritime also held an advantage in shots on goal (5-3) while the Beavers held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Goalkeepers:

Gonya made four saves for Farmington to suffer the hard fought loss. Thesing made three saves to pick up the shutout.
