2nd Quarter Surge Pushes Eagles Past Beavers in CMCFHC Playoffs

BANGOR, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team saw its 2024 season come to an end on Friday afternoon, falling to Husson University 12-0 in the first round of the playoffs. With this victory, Husson advances to face Thomas College on Saturday afternoon for the chance to be crowned the inaugural Central Maine Collegiate Field Hockey Conference (CMCFHC) Champions.

How It Happened

The Eagles opened the scoring just nine minutes and 44 seconds into the game when Tessa Capozzoli found the back of the net off a feed from Maddie Arsenault. Three minutes later, Ruby Kitchin added another goal, doubling the Eagles' lead with an assist from Karlie Ramsdell.

Husson maintained all the momentum after the first quarter, registering 15 shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Ella Grant (Sturbridge, Mass.) made four saves in the opening period for Farmington.

The Eagles quickly extended their lead to 5-0 with three goals from Faith Tillotson within the first five minutes of the second quarter. Averi Baker, Maddie Perkins, and Hope Bouchard each contributed assists on Tillotson's goals.

Goals from Perkins and Kyla Havey capped the first half with a commanding 7-0 lead for the Eagles.

In the third quarter, Husson's offense continued to apply significant pressure on Grant and the Beaver defense. Arsenault, Havey, and Madison Willey each added goals, extending the lead to 10-0.

After being held without a shot for the first 45 minutes, Farmington began to find its footing offensively in the fourth quarter. The Beavers registered four shots and earned four penalty corners, but they could only manage one shot on target from those attempts.

Kitchin and Elisa Picariello scored late goals to push the Eagles' lead to 12-0, completing the scoring for the afternoon.

Team Stats

Husson dominated the statistics, outshooting Farmington 50-4, with 28 shots on goal compared to just 1 for the Beavers. The Eagles also held a significant advantage in penalty corners, earning 17 to Farmington's 5.

The Goalkeepers

Despite facing a high volume of shots, Grant performed admirably in goal for the Beavers, making 15 crucial saves. For Husson, Maria Levesque and Maddie Stevens combined to make one save in their shutout victory.
