FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team started slow but came on strong to blow past the visiting University of Maine at Augusta, 102-69, on Saturday morning in Dearborn Gymnasium.
The matchup between the two teams came on day one of the Colby Tip-Off Tournament. The teams were originally scheduled to play at Colby College, where the Beavers were set to take on the Mules, and the Moose were scheduled to play Worcester State. However, due to a scheduling conflict, the matchup was changed, and Farmington became the host of the contest.
The win for the Beavers marks the first career victory for Head Coach Quinn Newton.
How It Happened
Farmington struggled to find a rhythm offensively over the first 11 and a half minutes of play, as the Moose clung to a 23-22 advantage. A flip switched for the Beavers at the 8:13 mark of the first half when Will Harriman (Biddeford, Maine) drove and kicked out to a wide-open Zach McLaughlin (Hampden, Maine) for three to give the Beavers a lead that they did not relinquish.
McLaughlin hit a three on the very next possession, and the Beavers' offense was off and running. After the two threes from McLaughlin, the Beavers went on a 26-9 run, taking a 16-point lead into halftime.
The Beavers came out of halftime rolling on the offensive end of the floor. Senior guard Simon Chadbourne (Portland, Maine) sprang free a few times in the opening minutes of the half, knocking down a deep three and a pair of mid-range jump shots to help push the Beavers' lead to 23 four and a half minutes into the second half.
An offensive rebound and putback from McLaughlin and then a three-pointer from him on the very next possession ballooned Farmington's lead up to 30.
First-year forward Kory Donlin (Warren, Maine) drilled a pair of threes, one from the top of the key and one from the left corner, and fellow first-year Tanner McCann (Sanford, Maine) drilled three threes of his own as Farmington's bench kept the offensive onslaught rolling midway through the second half.
The Beavers led by as much as 50 points in the second half, hitting 10 threes in the half as a team.
