Beavers Comeback Falls Short Against RPI on Day Two of Spartan Classic

CASTLETON, Vermont - The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team opened a lead in the 1st quarter but went cold in the 2nd quarter and were unable to crawl all the way back, dropping a nail-biter against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday afternoon on day two of the Spartan Classic. The Engineers topped the Beavers, 75-70.

The Records:

With the victory on Saturday, RPI improved to 5-1 while the Beavers fell to 2-4.

How it Happened:

Farmington came to play Saturday afternoon, giving the Engineers all that they could handle. Sophomore Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) was phenomenal throughout the game, making key plays on both ends of the floor for Farmington. Dow scored eight points and grabbed five boards in the first quarter to help the Beavers open up a 20-14 lead after the first ten minutes.

The Beavers went cold in the second quarter, shooting just 2-for-15 from the floor while the Engineers shot 10-22 to outscore Farmington 22-9 and take a 36-29 lead heading into halftime.

After a pair of buckets from Dow to open the second half, RPI's offense continued to roll and opened up a 15-point lead with just over three minutes left to play in the third quarter.

A three from Dow in the closing seconds of the third quarter cut the Beavers' deficit to just 11 heading into the fourth.

After a three-point play from Siena Smith in the opening minutes of the 4th quarter made it a 14-point game once again, Farmington responded with an 11-0 run to cut their deficit to three with five and a half left in the game. Dow and Sarah Poli (Benton, Maine) each scored four points to spark the Farmington run.

Amanda Gallagher hit a pair of free throws to put an end to the Farmington run, but Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) hit a pair of free throws of her own and Jaydn Pingree (Jay, Maine) drilled a three as Farmington came all the way back to tie the game up at 67 apiece.

Ashlyn O'Neil hit a pair of free throws and Tyler Hormazabal drilled a three on the subsequent possession to give the Engineers a five-point lead with 90 seconds to play. Dow hit one-of-two free throws and added a layup in the closing seconds but Farmington was unable to escape with the victory on Saturday afternoon.
