CASTINE, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team was unable to keep pace with Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) battle. The Mariners held onto an eight-point halftime lead before pulling away for a 67-45 victory.
The Records:
Following the loss, the Beavers dropped to 2-7 on the season and are still searching for their first conference victory, now 0-2. The Mariners improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in NAC play with the win.
How it Happened:
The game started slow, with both teams struggling to find their rhythm in the first quarter. Maine Maritime held a 5-0 lead before Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) drilled a three-pointer for the first points of the game for Farmington, three minutes and 22 seconds into the opening period.
Maine Maritime extended their lead to 12-3, but five quick points from Jaydn Pingree (Jay, Maine) and a bucket from Ruby McMinis helped the Beavers go on a 7-2 run, pulling Farmington back within four.
Trailing 16-10 to start the second quarter, Sarah Poli (Benton, Maine) made a pair of impressive post moves, scoring two layups to cut the Beavers' deficit to just two points.
The Mariners responded with a bucket from Hailey Blanchard and a three-pointer from Evelyn Dagan, pushing the lead back to seven. The teams traded baskets to close the half, with Maine Maritime taking a 29-21 lead after the first 20 minutes of play.
The Mariners broke the game open in the second half, outscoring the Beavers 21-10 in the third quarter while limiting Farmington to just 2-for-11 shooting from the field. Blanchard hit back-to-back threes early in the period, giving the Mariners their first double-digit lead at 12 points. By the start of the fourth quarter, Maine Maritime had extended their advantage to 19 points, thanks to contributions from several players.
The Beavers were unable to cut into the deficit in the final period. The teams traded baskets, with Maine Maritime leading by no more than 24 and no less than 17 points.
Stats of the Game:
Maine Maritime's defense made it difficult for the Beavers, holding Farmington to just 25.5% (14-55) shooting from the field and 23.5% (4-17) from beyond the arc. The Beavers committed 16 turnovers, which resulted in 15 points for the Mariners. Maine Maritime shot 36.6% (26-71) from the floor and 29% (9-31) from three-point range while dominating the boards with a 59-31 rebounding advantage.
Leaders - Farmington:
- Pingree finished with a team-high 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field.
- Dow totaled 12 points and added four rebounds in just 27 minutes of play.
Leaders - Maine Maritime:
- Dagan led the Mariners with 14 points, including four three-pointers.
- Blanchard contributed 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists.
- Erianne Moore, Mackenzie Monzon, Sydney Briscoe, Grace Huntwork, and Addison Forry all scored at least six points.
