Beavers Win Seesaw Battle With Anna Maria, Improve to 2-0

PAXTON, Massachusetts - The University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team won a back and forth, highly competitive contest on the road against Anna Maria, avenging last year's defeat and topping the Amcats, 14-12.

The Beavers were led offensively by the duo of sophomores Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) and Ashlee Farrar (South Paris, Maine) who combined to score 11 of the team 14 goals.

After Ivy Ballou gave the Amcats an early 1-0 lead, McMinis sparked a quick three goal spurt for the Beavers to take a 3-1 advantage with nine minutes to play in the opening period. McMinis scored two goals and added an assist during the run for the Beavers.

The next 15 minutes of the game were scoreless but Kyana Altif broke the silence, finding the back of the net with 9:23 remaining in the 2nd quarter. Riley Michaud knotted the game up just a minute and twenty seconds later.

Farrar scored her first goal of the game with 5:03 left to play in the 1st half, to help the Beaver regain the lead. The lead did not last long as Michaud found Altif in front of the net for another game tying tally inside the finals two minutes of the half.

Reigning North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Week Sadie Harvey (Bethel, Maine) had the answer, taking a pass from Abby Trefsger (South Portland, Maine) and beating Anna Maria's goalkeeper to help take a 5-4 lead into halftime.

Things began to open up in the second half as both teams combined for 17 second half goals in an intense second half.

The Amcats scored the first two goals of the half, as Raegan Hachey scored a man-up goal to tie the game at five and Michaud scored an unassisted marker to give Anna Maria the lead once again.

McMinis answered with her hat-trick marker but Altif scored her 2nd goal of the game just 15 second later directly off of the face-off to quickly re-grab the lead. After a phenomenal save from Kate Nowell (York, Maine) of the ensuing draw, Lydia Eastman (Chelsea, Vermont) found a wide open Lauren Girouard (Concord, Vermont) for the tying goal once again.

Hachey found the back of the goal twice over a 23 second span inside the eight-minute mark to give the Amcats a two-goal advantage for the first time in the game.

Farrar's second goal of the game with five minutes to play in the 3rd quarter pulled the Beavers within one as the game went into the 4th quarter.

Christine Ijawet scored the opening goal of the 4th quarter and opened up a two-goal lead but the Beavers responded with six straight goals to open up a four-goal advantage. McMinis and Farrar fully took over the game, scoring all six of the Beavers goals to put the game away. McMinis and Farrar scored three in the quarter apiece to lead the Beavers to their 2nd win of the season.
