Beavers Drop Hard Fought Battle to NEC

HENNIKER, New Hampshire - The University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team was unable to get past New England College on Wednesday, dropped a non-conference contest to the Pilgrims, 18-10. 

The Beavers battled all game and kept the game close for two and a half quarters but the wheels began to fall off, as the Pilgrims closed the game on an 11-3 spurt.

The Pilgrims scored two goals 25 seconds to open the scoring as Meadow Gilchrist and Nathalie Antigua each tallied unassisted markers to take a 2-0 two and a half minutes into the game. Ashlee Farrar (South Paris, Maine) scored just a minute and 17 seconds later to get the Beavers on the scoreboard. 

Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) and Abby Trefsger (South Portland, Maine) each tallied goals in the opening quarter as the Beavers trailed 4-3 heading into the 2nd quarter.

Antigua found the back of the net on a feed from Alexis Hornsby after the opening seven minutes of the 2nd quarter were scoreless. McMinis found an answer once again, converting a free-position shot just 19 seconds later. 

Cassie Kelly and Mackenzie McDonald scored consecutive goals in the final two and a half minutes of the half as the Pilgrims took a 7-4 lead into halftime.

The Beavers came out of halftime on fire, scoring three goals in two minutes and 19 seconds. McMinis scored her hat-trick marker just 34 seconds into the half. Emilie Crocker (Edgecomb, Maine) found the back of the net a minute and 13 seconds later, scoring her 2nd goal of the season with a man down. McMinis continued her scoring onslaught just 32 seconds later, adding her 4th goal of the game to knot the game up at seven.

The next four goals belonged to the Pilgrims as NEC opened up a four-goal lead. Crocker tallied a man-up goal to put a short end to the surge but straight goals from Hornsby and Kelly gave NEC the first five-goal lead of the game. 

NEC continued to separate themselves in the 4th quarter, outsourcing the Beavers 5-1 in the quarter en route to an 18-10 victory.

The loss for the Beavers marks their first of the season. McMinis led the Beavers with four goals and eight draw controls. Trefsger and Crocker each tallied a pair of goals for Farmington. Farrar finished with a team-high four ground balls. Kate Nowell (York, Maine) finished with seven saves.

NEC had four players with three or more goals. Antigua finished with five goals and three assists. Kelly added four goals and three assists while Gilchrist and Jacqueline Nee each had three goals.
