Beavers Kick-off the Season with Opening Day Sweep

MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina - The University of Maine at Farmington softball team kicked off their week in Myrtle Beach in style picking up a come from behind victory against Keystone College in game, topping the Giants 4-3. The Beavers shutout Franciscan University in game two, 5-0.

Game One

The Beavers kicked off their week in Myrtle Beach in style picking up a come from behind victory against Keystone College, topping the Giants 4-3.

Mack Bergen (Winnipeg, Manitoba) had it rolling in the circle, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out three in five innings. After a scoreless first three innings, Keystone had some traffic on the base paths after a pair of errors. Brooke Staple opened the inning reaching on an error. After Elle Olivero lined out for the first out of the inning, Mara Brooks reached on an error as well that allowed Staple to get to third giving the Giant 1st and 3rd with just one out.

The next hitter was Isabella Benitez who grounded a ball through the left side to bring in Staple and give Keystone a 1-0 lead. Bergen minimized the damage by getting Emily Shultz to roll into a double play to end the inning.

Clare Johns was also spinning a gem for Keystone until her armor began to crack and little in the bottom of the 5th inning. Melissa Mayo (Bridgton, Maine) hit a one out infield single to start the Beavers' rally. After Emily Collins was ruled out on a batter's interference, first-year shortstop Abby Wrinn (Wolcott, Conn.) ripped a double to deep left field bringing Mayo all the way around to tie the game up at one. First-year center fielder Jojo Daigneault (Canton, Conn.) followed with a single to score Wrinn and give the Beavers the lead.

Carleigh Schievink (Charlestown, Mass.) replaced Bergen in the top of the 6th. Schievink got into trouble to open the inning as the first four batters she faced reached but only surrendered one hit in the inning. Staple led off with a single but Olivero and Brooks reached via error. Staple was able to score when Brooks reached on an error. The next batter was Benitez who got hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out.

Schievink found another gear, working out of bases loaded no out jam to keep the game tied at 2. Schievink got Schultz to ground into a fielder's choice and then struck out the next two hitters to escape the threat.

The Beaver tacked on two in the bottom of the 6th as Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) led off with a double and came into score on a bunt single from Bella Miller (Lewiston, Maine). Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine) reached via dropped third strike and was pinch run for by Rita Benoit (Hallowell, Maine). Benoit came into score on an RBI groundout from Grace Pratt (Rockland, Maine) to take a 4-2 lead into the 7th.

The Giants opened up the top of the 7th with a Isabella Mandarano double to left center. Staple delivered an RBI single to cut the Beavers' lead in half and give Keystone the tying run on first base. But Schievink got Olivero to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

Daigneault went three-for-three in her collegiate debut while Wrinn recorded a pair of hits in her collegiate debut as well. Pike also went 2-3 with a run scored.
Staple led the Giants going 2-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Game Two

The Beavers got an absolute gem out of Mayo and Benot in the circle in game two. The two combined to throw a complete game one-hitter, striking out ten and walking three.

The Barons had runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings but Mayo struck out a pair in each inning to get out of each unscathed.

After being held hitless for the opening two innings of the game, Wrinn ripped a two-out triple to right field and came into score on a passed ball to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead. Daigneault reached on an error, stole 2nd, and came into score on an RBI single from Pike. The next hitter was Katie Morse (Dixfield, Maine) who recorded her first hit as a Beaver, bringing in Pike with a double to right field and giving the Beavers a 3-0 through two and a half innings.

The Beavers put another crooked number on the board in the 4th. Reilly Russell (Windham, Maine) recorded her first career hit with a single to left and came into score on a single from Stephanie Morse (Waldoboro, Maine). The hit for Morse was the first of her collegiate career. After Wrinn reached on an error to keep the inning alive, Daigneault singled to left to bring in Morse and extend the Beaver lead to 5-0.

Benoit rolled in her three innings out of the bullpen, going three perfect innings, striking out five, including striking out the side in the 5th inning. Mayo picked up her first collegiate victory and helped the Beavers to their first opening day sweep in the past ten years.

The Beavers scattered eight hits from eight different players. Madison Kozares picked up the only hit for the Barons, a single in the 4th inning.
