Beavers Drop a Pair of Pitching Duels at Wentworth

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team dropped a pair of competitive pitching duels on the road today against Wentworth Institute of Technology. The Beavers fell in game one, 4-3 and 5-0 in game two. After the two losses, the Beavers dropped to 4-11 on the season.

Game One

The Beavers got the offense rolling early, scoring a pair in the top of the 1st inning to jump out to a quick lead. Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and moved over to 3rd on a double from Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine). After Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) was hit by a pitch, the Beavers had loaded the bases with just one away in the inning. Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) drew a walk and Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) hit a sacrifice fly to right to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead.

The Leopards wasted no time getting back into the game. Wentworth tacked on two in the bottom of the 1st inning, after A.T. DiPina and Matthew Favazzo delivered RBI singles, making it a 2-2 game after one inning.

The Beavers broke the tie in the top of the 2nd inning. Colby Lewis (Blue Hill, Maine) drew a lead-off walk and came in to score on an RBI single from Sargent.

After giving up a pair of runs in the 1st, junior starting pitcher Will Harriman (Biddeford, Maine) settled in, coasting through the middle innings, giving up just one hit through the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings.

With the Beavers clinging to a 3-2 lead, the Leopard knotted up the score in the bottom of the 5th after Matt Robinson delivered a one-out single, stole 2nd, and later came in to score on a wild pitch.

The Beavers were held hitless in the 6th and 7th innings setting the Leopards up for a chance to walk-off with a win with a run in the bottom of the 7th. Wentworth did just that. Mike Sibert led-off the inning with a walk and advanced to 2nd on an error on a pick-off attempt. Robinson followed with a single to give the Leopards runners on the corners with nobody out. Devon Lapierre followed with a single into left to bring home Sibert and win the game for Wentworth.

The Beavers were held to just four hits in the game. Sargent went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored to pace the Beavers offensively. Harriman went six innings, scattering eight hits and giving up three runs while striking out two.

Wentworth pounded out ten hits. Lapierre, Christian Roncal, A.T. DiPina, and Robinson all recorded two hits to lead Wentworth offensively. Jon Campbell picked up the win in relief, going four innings and striking out seven

Game Two

The Beavers could not get their offense rolling at all against Brodi Farinas in game two. Farinas was in command throughout the whole game, going six innings, allowing just two hits and striking out nine as the Leopards topped the Beaver 5-0. Nigel Cross pitched a scoreless inning of relief as well for Wentworth.

Aaron Goschke (Windham, Maine) had a strong outing on the mound for the Beavers, going 4.2 innings giving up five runs, only four earned, while scattering six hits and striking out one. Lucas Tuttle (Framingham, Mass.) went 1.1 innings of hitless relief.

Robinson continued his hot day at the plate, delivering a two-RBI single in the bottom of the 2nd to help Wentworth open up a 2-0 lead.

The Leopards tacked on three in the bottom of the 5th as Roncal hit a towering three-run homerun to straight away left, making it a 5-0 game.

First-year Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) and Sargent delivered the two hits for Farmington.
