Beavers Split with Owls in NAC Play

BRIDGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington and the University of Maine at Presque Isle squared off on Tuesday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader header played at Bridgton Academy due to field conditions. The Beavers took game one, 9-8 while the Owls responded with a 12-4 victory in game two.

Game One

The Farmington offense got things rolling quickly, posting a six-spot in the bottom of the first inning. Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) led off the inning with a single up the middle and Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) followed with a double down the first base line to give the Beavers two runners in scoring position with nobody out.

Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) drove in Marquis with a ground out and Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) followed with an RBI single to bring home Coombs and make it a 2-0 game.

Parsell made a heads up play on the base paths, scoring from 2nd base on a wild pitch that the Owl catcher could not find to increase the Beavers' lead to 3-0 with two out in the 1st. Three straight singles from Colby Lewis (Blue Hill, Maine), Ike Wrigley (Farmington, Maine) and Jayden Meader (Farmington, Maine) netted the Beavers three more runs extending their lead to 6-0 through one full inning.

Presque Isle wasted no time getting back into the ball game. Cyrus Sewell led off the 2nd with a walk and Ricky Goupille and Payton Jones followed with singles to promptly load the bases. A pair of wild pitches allowed Sewell and Goupille to score. Garrett Chadwick recorded an RBI single and later scored on a passed ball, making it a 6-4 game after an inning and a half.

Sargent blasted a home run to straight away right field, securing his first home run of the season in the bottom of the 2nd to help the Beavers claim a 7-4 lead.

After getting knocked around in the 2nd, first-year starting pitcher Gabe Philbrick (Florence, Mont.) settled down in the 3rd, posting his second scoreless inning. Presque Isle got to Philbrick in the 4th. Joey Lippo led off with a single, moved over to 2nd on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from Chadwick. The single from Chadwick chased Philbrick from the game. Lucas Tuttle (Framingham, Mass.) took over on the mound and quickly found himself in trouble. Tuttle hit the first batter he faced and then surrendered consecutive singles as the Owls knotted the game up at seven.

Tuttle did settle in, striking out Anthony Searels and getting Sewell to ground into an inning ending double play to keep the game tied.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the 6th. Tuttle, who was still on the mound, gave up a lead-off double to Tim Burns. Two batters later, Romeo Harris gave the Owls the lead, singling to right to bring home Burns.

Three straight singles to open up the bottom of the 6th from Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.), Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) and Lewis loaded the bases with nobody out for the Beavers. After a pop out for the first out of the inning, Meader hit a bleeder into short right field for a single to knot the game up at eight. The throw back into the infield got away and allowed Pruett to come around to score as the Beavers jumped back ahead, 9-8.

Bloch slammed the door shut in the top of the 7th, setting UMPI down 1-2-3 to close out the victory in game one for Farmington.

Game Two

Defense was the story in game two. The Beavers made six errors in the field, leading to six unearned runs in the 12-4 loss.

The game started off very promising for Farmington. Two hit by pitches and an UMPI error loaded the bases with nobody out in the 2nd. After a strikeout, Callister Montembeau (Kennebunk, Maine) ripped a single to left to score Parsell and stake the Beavers to an early 1-0 lead. A passed ball allowed the Beavers second run to score and Meader recorded an RBI groundout to give Farmington a 3-0 after two.

After two quick outs, the Owls scored six runs in the top of the 3rd, turning a three-run deficit into a three-run lead. Burns delivered a two-run double to get UMPI on the board. The defense for the Beavers began to fall apart after the Burns double. Three errors extended the innings, resulting in four more runs crossing the plate as UMPI grabbed the 6-3 lead.

Three straight walks for Farmington in the bottom of the 4th put the Beavers in business. But they could only muster a Meader SAC fly, cutting it to a 6-4 deficit.

UMPI scored a single run in the 5th on a wild pitch but added three more in the 7th. After a lead off walk, TJ Dorn (Westbrook, Maine) induced a ground ball that was tailor made for a double play. But the ball wasn't fielded cleanly and everybody was safe. After another walk, the Owls had the bases loaded with nobody out. Mason Long drew a bases loaded walk to push across another Owls run. Goupille added a SAC fly and Lippo singled to left to bring home Searels, making it a 10-4 Owls lead.

Searels added an RBI double and Goupille singled to bring home Searels in the top of the 8th to all but put an end to the ball game.

Farmington loaded the bases on three straight singles to open the bottom of the 8th but did not score.

The Beavers are now 5-18 following today's doubleheader.
