Polar Bears Snap Beavers Win Streak

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Winners of six of the last seven, the University of Maine at Farmington softball team had their win streak halted by Bowdoin College, dropping both ends of Friday afternoon's doubleheader. The Beavers were shut out in game one, 8-0 and dropped game two by a score of 17-6.

Game One

Farmington looked to be in business to open the game as Abby Wrinn (Wolcott, Conn.) led off the game with a single and Bella Miller (Lewiston, Maine) was hit by a pitch giving the Beavers runners on first and second with nobody out. Bowdoin starting pitcher Maddie Current quickly settled in, striking out the next two hitters she faced and getting Grace Pratt (Rockland, Maine) to ground out to end the threat.

Bowdoin jumped out quickly in the bottom of the 1st. Anika Ewert led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a double from Chloe Garcia. Kyla Gary scored later in the inning on a SAC fly from Elise Siciliano.

Garcia hit a bases clearing double in the bottom of the 2nd, extending the Bowdoin lead to 5-0.

The Beavers threatened to score once again in the top of the 3rd, having the first two batters of the inning reach base as Melissa Mayo (Bridgton, Maine) drew a walk and Wrinn ripped her second single of the game. Current once again thwarted the Beavers threat, inducing weak contact from the next three hitters she faced.

Bowdoin added a single run in the bottom of the 4th on a SAC fly from Sydney Lang and walked off with the mercy rule victory, tallying a pair of runs in the bottom of the 5th. Ewert recorded an RBI double to make it 7-0 and Gary drove her in with a single to end the ballgame.

Farmington mustered just four hits in the game, all singles. Wrinn finished with two hits while Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) and Carleigh Schievink (Charlestown, Mass.) recorded her first hit of the season.

Ewert, Gary, and Garcia combined for eight of the Polar Bears nine hits and drove in six of their eight runs to lead the way to their 19th victory of the season.

Game Two

After being held scoreless in game one, the Beavers offense got things started quickly in game two. Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine) got Farmington on the scoreboard for the first time, driving in Miller with an RBI single to center. Pratt followed with an RBI groundout to extend Farmington's lead to two. After a two out single from Mayo kept the inning alive, the Beavers scored two on a fielding error to make it a 4-0 game. Emily Collins (Moscow, Maine) added an RBI single to help Farmington post a five-spot in the 1st inning.

Ewert led off the bottom of the 1st inning with a walk, stole 2nd, stole 3rd, and scored on a single from Penelope Fong-Picariello. Fong-Picariello scored later in the inning on a drop third strike, making it a 5-2 game after one inning.

The Polar Bear offense knotted up the game in the bottom of the 2nd. Fong-Picariello ripped an RBI single to left and Siciliano delivered a bases loaded, two-out, two-run single to make it a 5-5 game.

Bowdoin took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd on an RBI single from Ellie Sullivan. Sullivan scored on an RBI single from Ewert as Bowdoin opened up a 7-5 lead.

In the top of the 5th, Mayo reached first on a dropped third strike to lead off the inning. Olivia Paradis (Saco, Maine) followed with an infield single to 3rd, giving Farmington runners on the corners with nobody out. A SAC fly from Dow cut the Beavers deficit to just one at 7-6.

The Polar Bears responded in a big way, scoring six runs on six hits in the bottom half of the 5th to break the game open. Fong-Picariello picked up another RBI single while Garcia drove in two on a single of her own. JK Bradley added an RBI single and RBI walks from Shea Sullivan and Ellie Sullivan opened up a 13-6 lead for Bowdoin

Bowdoin loaded the bases in the bottom of the 6th and Lang quickly unloaded them with a walk-off grand slam to end game two in a mercy rule.

Farmington pounded out nine hits. Paradis and Dow led the Beavers with a pair of hits each. Dow, Wrinn, and Miller all doubled for Farmington.

Bowdoin rattled off 18 hits. Ewert and Fong-Picariello combined for eight hits and seven runs scored to pace the Polar Bear offense. Lang and Bradley each added three hits.
