Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

SUNY Poly Outlasts Farmington

FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington was outlasted by the visiting SUNY Poly Wildcats on Sunday morning in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest at Leib Field, 14-10.

Today's game was the UMF lacrosse team dedicated to Morgan's Message. Morgan's Message is a non-profit organization that was created in memory of Morgan Rogers, a Duke University women's lacrosse player who tragically lost her mental health battle in 2019. Morgan's Message was created to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health, provide student-athletes resources to normalize conversations surrounding mental health, and equalize treatment of mental and physical health in the athletic community.

Katie Kopcza got the visitors on the board just 51 seconds into the game after Rylie Fischer, created a turnover and found Kopcza in front of the goal to grab a 1-0 lead.

Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) scored her 1st goal of the game, knotting the game up at one with 11:39 left to play on a beautiful feed from Lydia Eastman (Chelsea, Vermont). McMinis scored her 2nd goal of the game just a minute and a half later to give the Beavers their first lead of the game.

Callie Johnson tied the game up two minutes later on a feed from Kopcza right in front of the net.

McMinis scored her hat-trick goal with 5:35 let to play in the opening half to give the Beavers a lead again. Johnson had the answer once again, scoring a man-up goal to knot the game up at three.

The high scoring 1st quarter continued with goals from Madison Bastien and Kopcza 45 seconds apart to help SUNY Poly take a 5-3 after one.

The helter skelter affair continued to open the 2nd quarter. McMinis pulled the Beavers back within a goal with her 4th goal of the game, three and a half minutes into the 2nd.

Three straight goals from Poly allowed the Wildcats to open up their largest lead of the 1st half at 8-4. Katelynn Truaxx, Madison Bastien, and Abigail Rosaschi scored the goals for Poly.

The final 7:30 of the 2nd quarter were scoreless as the Wildcats clung to an 8-4 lead heading into halftime.

Ashlee Farrar (South Paris, Maine) scored 23 seconds into the 3rd quarter and Lauren Girouard (Concord, Vermont) found the back of the net three minutes later to pull the Beavers back within two.

Madyn LaFleur and Johnson responded with goals for Poly, helping the Wildcats regain a four-goal advantage heading into the 4th quarter.

After McMinis' 5th goal pulled the Beavers within three once again, a goal from Kopcza and two from Johnson over a minute and 15 second span opened up a six-goal lead for the Wildcats.

Farrar kicked into a new gear, scoring three goals in three minutes midway through the 4th quarter to get the Beavers back in the game, but the Beavers couldn't come all the way back.

McMinis finished with five goals while Farrar added four to lead the Beavers offensively. Abby Trefsger (South Portland, Maine) recorded a team high six draw controls. Kate Nowell (York, Maine) added 13 saves in net for Farmington.

Johnson finished with six goals and Kopcza had three goals and four assists to pace the Wildcats. Jayden Brown was phenomenal in goal making 15 saves.
