Mariners Use Big 1st Half to Buzz Past Beavers

FARMINGTON, Maine - The visiting Maine Maritime Academy Mariners used a big 1st half, scoring 15 goals in the opening 30 minutes, to top the host University of Maine at Farmington, 21-6 in a non-conference women's lacrosse game on Wednesday afternoon.

The Beavers jumped out quickly, scoring in the opening minute, as Abby Trefsger (South Portland, Maine) made a strong cut into the teeth of the Mariner defense, received a pass from Emma Dunn (Farmington, Maine) and found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead just 60 seconds into the game.

The Mariners got on the scoreboard two and a half minutes later, beginning a six goal run to help put the Mariners in command, 6-1. Lillian Diversi scored the first goal and Aubrey Mitchell scored the next three for the Mariners. Diversi and Bella Scolaro scored the 5th and 6th goals respectively as the Mariners opened up the five-goal advantage.

Ashlee Farrar (South Paris, Maine) made a strong individual effort, taking the ball from behind the net, relentlessly getting around a pair of Mariner defenders to get to the front of the net and fire a low shot past Mariner goalkeeper Ella Bowes.

The Mariner offense continued to roll to open up the 2nd quarter. The Mariners tallied eight goals in the 2nd, extending their lead to 15-3 going into halftime. Diversi and Rebecca Caron each scored three goals in the quarter while Hazel Stoddard added two of her own. Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) tallied the 2nd quarter goal for the Beavers.

The offensive pace slowed a little in the 3rd quarter as the two teams combined for five goals. Caron, Diversi, and Mitchell all tallied markers for Maine Maritime. McMinis added her 2nd and Farrar added her 2nd with a man down. Farmington trailed 18-5 heading to the 4th quarter.

McMinis opened the scoring in the 4th, finding the back of the net to tally a hat-trick on a feed from Trefsger. Three straight goals from Scolaro, Caron, and Stoddard made it a 21-6 game and finished off the score.

Stoddard created huge problems on the draw for the Beavers. Stoddard tallied 18 draw controls in the game, continually winning possession for the Mariners. Diversi totaled nine points with six goals and three assists. Caron scored six of her own and  Mitchell added four goals and a pair of assists. Scolaro tallied two goals and five assists.

McMinis scored a team-high three goals for the Beavers and Farrar pitched in with two goals of her own. Trefsger added a team-high four ground balls.
