Farmington Unable to Keep Pace with Husson

BANGOR, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team was unable to keep pace with Husson University in their North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opener on the road on Wednesday evening. The Eagles downed the Beavers, 17-1.

The Eagles offense put the Beavers on the defensive right from the opening whistle, scoring their first goal just 2:21 into the game. Natalie Whitten found an open Averi Baker in front of the goal for the games first tally.

Sophia Gomez scored two and a half minutes later to double the Eagles' lead as Husson continued to apply pressure on the Beavers backline. Whitten and Laela Martinez added goals in the opening quarter as Husson extended their lead to 4-0 after one quarter.

It was more of the same for the Eagles in the 2nd quarter. Husson scored four more goals, pushing their lead up to 8-0 heading into halftime. Martinez and Whitten each scored their 2nd goals of the game while Baker scored her 2nd and 3rd goals to help the Eagles open up the eight-goal advantage.

Martinez, Gracie Gardner, and Whitten each scored a goal over a two minute and 14 second span to open up the 3rd quarter and expand the Eagles lead to 11-0.

The Beavers got on the scoreboard for the first time with 6:54 left to play in the 3rd quarter. Junior midfielder Abby Trefsger (South Portland, Maine) found a cutting Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) to get the Beavers on the board.

But that was the extent of the offense the Beavers were able to muster. Husson held a steep advantage in shots (43-12) en route to their 2nd victory of the season. Husson scored five goals in the 4th quarter to close out the 17-1 win.

Trefsger finished with a team-high four ground balls while Emma Dunn (Farmington, Maine), Ashlee Farrar (South Paris, Maine), and Kt Lebakken (Anoka, Minn.) each tallied three. Sophomore goalkeeper Skye Cotnoir (West Gardiner, Maine) was phenomenal in goal, finishing with a career-high 14 saves.

Offensively for the Eagles, Baker, Whitten, and Martinez each tallied three goals. Whitten finished with three assists as well to finish with a game-high six points.
