Offensive Woes Continue for Farmington, Drop Two with Thomas

WATERVILLE, Maine - After mustering just three runs in 30 innings on the road against Husson University last weekend, the University of Maine at Farmington baseball team scored just two runs in a pair of seven inning games against Thomas College earlier today. The Terriers went on to win game one 7-0 and game two 14-2.

Game One

Terrier starting pitcher Andrew Pruell was in control from the get-go, going all seven innings, surrendering just four hits, walking one and striking out seven.

Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, advanced to second on a passed ball and later was stranded at 3rd base to end the inning. That would be the only runner the Beavers would get passed 2nd base for the entirety of the ball game.

Elijah Morton led off the bottom half of the 1st inning with a bunt single, stole 2nd, advanced to 3rd on a passed ball, and later scored on a passed ball to quickly open up a 1-0 Terrier lead.

Thomas wasted no time adding to their lead, scoring three in the bottom of the 2nd to make it a 4-0 ballgame. Matt Seymour led off the inning with a double, and consecutive walks to Patrick Temby and Jason Bartlett loaded the bases with nobody out. Hayden Dippner followed with a SAC fly and Morton ripped a two-run double to left to extend Thomas' lead.

An RBI double from DJ Cagnina made it a 5-0 lead in the 5th inning. Samuel Keblinsky and Cagnina scored on an error later in the inning as the Terriers made it a 7-0 game.

Pruell gave up a single to Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) in the 6th and a double to Ike Wrigley in the 7th but stranded them on base to finish with the shutout and grab his 6th win of the season.

Aaron Goschke (Gorham, Maine) struggled some on the mound for the Beavers. Goschke tossed three innings, giving up four hits and three walks, leading to four runs. Wrigley went 3-for-3 to lead the Beavers offensively.

Morton, Tony Meza, Cagnina, and Seymour all had two-hit games for the Terriers in game one.

Game Two

It was more of the same in game two as the Terriers staked themselves to an early 5-0 lead after one inning.

Four different Terriers recorded RBI singles in the 1st inning and Seymour scored on a wild pitch. Cam Haynes, Seymour, Aaron Young, and Bartlett all picked up RBI knocks in the inning for Thomas.

After Meza walked to lead off the bottom of the 2nd, Cagnina brought him in to score on an RBI double down the line in left field, extending the Thomas lead to six.

The Beavers were held scoreless for the first ten innings of baseball today, but finally cracked the scoreboard in the top of the 4th. Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) led off the inning with a double and Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) followed with a walk, and Callister Montembeau (Kennebunk, Maine) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. An RBI groundout from Cal Tibbitts (Bath, Maine) and a bases loaded walk from Greyson Bell (Las Vegas, Nev.) plated two for the Beavers, making it a 6-2 game.

The Terriers scored a single run in the bottom of the 4th and added three more in the bottom of the 5th to put the game out of reach. An RBI single from Mitch Regan, a SAC fly from Morton, and a two-run double from Meza in the bottom of the 6th extended the Thomas lead to 14-2.

The Beavers had just two hits in the game as four Terrier pitchers combined for the victory. Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) didn't last too long on the mound for the Beavers, surrendering six hits and six runs on just two innings of work. Eight of the 14 runs the Beavers allowed were unearned as a result of four errors made in the game.

Thomas pounded out 13 hits and were led by Meza, Young, Bartlett, and Dippner who all had two hits in the game.

UP NEXT

The two teams will square off on Sunday afternoon for another two game set at Hippach Field. Game one is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
