Beavers and Owls Split in Regular Season Finale

FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington and the University of Maine at Presque Isle battled to a split in Monday afternoon's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader at Hippach Field in Farmington. The Owls topped the Beavers in game one, 11-4. The Beavers bounced back in a big way in game two, coming from behind to take down the Owls, 5-2.

Game One

Defensive struggles cost the Beavers in a big way in game one. The Beavers made four errors in the ballgame leading to seven unearned runs scoring. First-year starting pitcher Gabe Philbrick (Florence, Mont.) should have been out of the inning in relatively quick fashion, but an error kept the inning alive. Philbrick hit Joey Blake to give the Owls a pair of runners on base. An RBI single from Payton Jones and a two-run double off the bat of Anthony Searels gave UMPI a 3-0 lead after a half inning.

The Beavers scored an unearned run of their own in the bottom half of the first as Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) reached base on an error to open the frame and later scored on an RBI groundout from Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine)

The Beavers' defensive struggles continued in the top of the 2nd. A harmless one-out ground ball in which Jonny Pruett's (Waterford, Maine) throw went wide, came back to hurt as UMPI scored three more two-out runs to open up a five run lead. Garrett Chadwick and Tim Burns recorded RBIs in the inning for the Owls.

A two-run double from Chadwick and a two-run bomb from Burns in the top of the 5th made it a ten-run game and all but put the game away.

The Beaver offense could not get anything going against Owls starter Spencer Harman. Harman allowed just one run and five hits through the first six innings. The Beavers started to make some noise off Harman in the bottom of the 7th, but it was too late. Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) drove in Ike Wrigley (Farmington, Maine) with a SAC fly after Wrigley tripled to score the Beavers 2nd run of the game. Marquis reached on catcher's interference and later scored on a wild pitch while Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) drove in Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) with a SAC fly of his own.

The Owls pounded out 11 hits. Chadwick and Burns led the way with two hits, two runs, and three RBIs each. Jones and Mason Long each added two hits.

Sargent and Wrigley each tallied two hits to lead the offensive attack for Farmington.

Game Two

The first two innings of the game were pretty uneventful as the teams tallied one single a piece. But the offenses started to get active in the 3rd inning.

As was the case early in game one, defense cost the Beavers in the top of the 3rd. Joey Lippo reached via error and with two down, Burns cranked his 2nd home run of the day, a two-run shot to dead center to give the Owls the early 2-0 lead.

The Beavers wasted no time, responding with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the 3rd. After the first two batters of the inning were retired quietly, Marquis kept the inning alive with a single on the ground into right. Bloch followed with a double off the wall in right field, scoring Marquis all the way from 1st base. After a walk to Sargent, Parsell delivered an RBI single to left center to tie the game up at two.

An error, a single, and a walk loaded the bases with two outs and chased Sam Wrigley (Farmington, Maine) from the game in the top of the 4th. Chris Albert (Bradley, Maine) took over for Wrigley and got Chadwick to fly out to center field to end the threat.

Bloch broke the 2-2 tie with a sole blast down the line in left. The home run for Bloch was the first of his collegiate career.

Farmington scored a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th on a two-run single from Colby Lewis (Blue Hill, Maine). Callister Montembeau (Kennebunk, Maine) singled and Pruett doubled before the Lewis clutch single.

Albert pitched the final 3.1 innings in relief. Albert was ultra-effective, giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out a pair to pick up his 2nd victory of the season.

The Beavers 2024 campaign came to an end after the conclusion of today's doubleheader, finishing with a 10-29 record and a 6-14 record in NAC play.
