FARMINGTON, Maine - University of Maine at Farmington Director of Athletics, Jamie Beaudoin, is pleased to announce that Sean Cabaniss has been promoted to Director of Track & Field and Cross Country. Cabaniss previously served as the Head Coach of Track and Field and the Assistant Coach of Cross Country during the 2023-24 academic year.
"Sean has made a positive impact on our Cross Country and Track & Field programs both as a coach, as well as during his time as a student-athlete. He has led our programs to great success, and we look forward to seeing the heights he will bring the program to in the immediate future," Beaudoin stated.
A 2017 graduate, Cabaniss was a pioneer in creating the track and field program at Farmington. He was a co-founder, president, captain, and student-coach of the track and field program during the team's club years. In 2015, the club became a varsity-sponsored sport at UMF.
Following graduation, Cabaniss was awarded a prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarship, which he applied to his graduate studies in Exercise Science at Smith College. While at Smith, Cabaniss served as an Assistant Track & Field Coach for two years.
Cabaniss returned to the University of Maine at Farmington in January 2020, taking over as the Head Coach of the Cross Country and Track & Field programs. He held that role for three years until Robbie Hollis '19 was hired as the Head Cross Country Coach, adding a second full-time coach to the Cross Country and Track & Field programs. With Hollis' hiring, Cabaniss maintained his role as the Head Track & Field Coach and transitioned to Assistant Coach of the Cross Country program.
Under Cabaniss's direction, the Track & Field and Cross Country programs have flourished. He assisted in the development of the men's cross country program's first North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship in 2023. The NAC Championship came a year after he led the men's program to the best NCAA Regional finish in program history during the 2022 season. Since taking over in 2020, Cabaniss has recruited and coached eight First Team All-Conference honorees, seven Second Team All-Conference honorees, the 2023 NAC Runner of the Year Justin Castaldo, and the 2023 NAC Rookie of the Year Ethan Linscott.
On the Track & Field side, Cabaniss has produced the 2023 and 2024 Field Athletes of the Year, Alixx Canwell '24 and Ben Vachon '25, the 2023 NAC Woman of the Year Abby Minott '23, and three NAC Senior Scholar-Athletes of the Year, Isaiah Reid '21, Tabitha Lingar '21, and Minott. He has also helped produce 14 First Team and 13 Second Team All-Conference Track & Field athletes. Cabaniss has guided the Track & Field program to 42 New England Qualifying performances, 22 of which came within the events group he specializes in.
Cabaniss helped produce the first USTFCCCA All-Region honorees in program history. Canwell was named to the USTFCCCA All-Region Team in the hammer throw in 2023 and 2024. Carrie Burr '25 Â was named to the USTFCCCA All-Region Team in the heptathlon in 2024.
Each of the men's and women's teams placed 2nd overall at the 2024 NAC Championship, setting a program record for most points scored.
Cabaniss has seen great success on the track and course, and he has also made a lasting impact on the community and positively influenced the experience of the student-athletes who go through his program. Under Cabaniss's leadership, the UMF Track Relay for Life events donated over $1,600 to the American Cancer Society over the last four years. He also helped realize the creation of a discus and hammer throw facility at Prescott Fields, improving the quality of the student-athlete experience for throwers in the programs.
"In the last five years, we have made exciting progress with our programs, and we hope it only continues to accelerate from here. I am honored by the new title, and I am excited to continue developing our athletes at a school and within a program that means so much to me," Cabaniss said.
