Lash Scores Late, Beavers Pull Out Come-From-Behind Victory Over Johnson

FARMINGTON, Maine - Senior Forward Abby Lash (Waldoboro, Maine) had drilled the post in the 74th minute on a shot that would have broken a 3-3 tie. In the final five minutes, Lash made her shot count beating VTSU Johnson Goalkeeper Sophia Johnson from point blank range to push the Beavers past the Badger, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Leib Field.

The Records:

After losing three straight, today's win felt a little extra sweet for the Beavers who are now 2-3. Today's loss for the Badgers marks their 2nd of the early season. Johnson is now 2-2-1.

How it Happened:

After a relatively slow opening 25 minutes, the pace of play began to pick up in a big way in the final 20 minutes of the first half. Jenna Jones got the goal scoring started when she powered home a loose ball inside the six yard box to stake the visitors to a one-goal lead.

The Beavers quickly tilted the field in their favor, responding by earning three corner kicks in a four minute span. The Beavers were able to muster just one shot on frame during the stretch as Johnson continued to cling to a one-goal advantage.

Peyton Fairchild bent in a wicked goal from the left corner on a corner kick to double the Badgers lead with 5:20 left to play in the opening half.

Farmington did not go to halftime quietly. Natalie Tracy (Oakland, Maine) used her speed and strength to get past the Badgers' backline and took the ball along the endline before firing a low, hard shot into the back of the goal to make it a 2-1 game with 2:34 left to play.

The Beavers weren't done after Tracy's goal got them back within one. Lash sent an outswinging ball from the left corner to the back post that found the body of Grace Mahmood (Oxford, Conn.) who guided the ball into the net to tie the game up in the closing seconds of the 1st half.

The Beavers offense kept rolling to open the 2nd half. Rita Benoit (Hallowell, Maine) made a pair of dribble moves to free herself before ripping a left footed strike to the top right corner for her first goal of the season and give Farmington their first lead of the game.

The lead didn't last long, just 16 seconds as Leighton Fenyus tied the game up at three as Beavers struggled to clear a bouncing ball in their own defensive zone.

Both teams were relatively quiet over the next 30 minutes of play aside from Lash's ringing of the cross bar. In the 86th minute, Tracy sent a long thru ball wide to Lash who sprinted past her defender and carried the ball right out in front of the net before sliding a right-footed shot to the lower left corner to tally the game clincher.

Team Stats:

The Beavers held advantages in shots (16-9), shots on goal (8-7), and corner kicks (5-3) in the victory.

The Goalkeepers:

Junior goalkeeper Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine) made four saves to pick up her 2nd victory of the season. Isabel Atkisson made three saves in the first half for the Badgers. Johnson took over in the second half and made one save.
