Beavers Come Up Short in Home Opener

FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team hosted the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday afternoon in what was the Beavers 2024 home opener. Farmington played a complete game but couldn't find the equalizer, dropping the contest 1-0.

The Records:

Following Wednesday's loss, the Beavers are now 0-6 on the season while the Huskies are now 3-4.

How it Happened:

The Beavers played stout defense throughout the game. Farmington was forced to defend 22 penalty corners, but were fantastic at limiting the offensive damage and keeping the shot attempts down.

The Huskies produced eight penalty corners in the opening period but were held to just two shot attempts. The Beavers produced the best opportunity to score in the opening period off from a penalty corner of their own. Autumn Freeman (Byron, Maine) inserted the corner and the ball found the stick of Elizabeth Kendall (Guilford, Maine) who ripped a shot from the top of the circle that got by Eleanor Folsom, who was off her line. Luckily for the Huskies, Kasey Mushlit was behind Folsom and swatted the ball away to record the defensive save and keep the game scoreless.

The second quarter was a possession battle as both teams combined for just one shot as the game remained knotted at zero heading into halftime.

USM quickly found the game breaker in the opening moments of the 3rd quarter when Norie Tibbetts drilled home a pass from Sage Drinkwater, executing a well designed penalty corner to make it a 1-0 game.

Beavers' sophomore goalkeeper Ella Grant (Sturbridge, Mass.) made three saves in the opening minutes of the 4th quarter, two of them from point-blank range, to keep the Beavers within striking distance.

Desperately searching for the equalizer, Farmington earned a penalty corner inside the final three minutes of play leading to a shot from Kendall that was saved and keeping the score 1-0 Huskies. The shot from Kendall was the last substantial opportunity Farmington was able to produce.

Team Stats:

The Huskies held an advantage in shots (13-4), shots on goal (10-3) and penalty corners (22-3) en route to their 3rd victory of the season.

The Goalkeepers:

Grant gave the Beavers a fighting chance, making nine saves in the losing effort. Folsom and Katie Hanlon combined for the shutout. Hanlon made two saves while Folsom did not make one.
