Beavers Battle Owls to Tie

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team traveled to the University of Maine at Presque Isle to take on the Owls in an important North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest and came away with a 1-1 draw.

The Records:

The Beavers exit play with a 2-4-2 record, including a 0-1-2 record in NAC play. The Owls are now 3-2-1 with a 1-2-1 record against conference opponents.

How it Happened:

The Beavers surrendered an early goal after a mistouch by the Beavers defense set up a Madelynn Morrow breakaway opportunity. Morrow slid a low shot past the outstretched arms of junior goalkeeper Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine) to give the Owls a 1-0 lead in the 9th minute of the game.

Following the Owls early goal, the Beavers controlled a majority of the play, applying fierce pressure on the Owls backline and their goalkeeper, Mia Voisine. The Beavers were aggressive seeking the game tying goal in the final minutes of the 1st half. Farmington recorded three shots on frame and had three corner kicks in the final five and a half minutes but were unable to find the equalizer. The Beavers best opportunity in the opening half came as Natalie Tracy (Oakland, Maine) beat a defender and ripped a shot labeled for the side netting. But Voisine made an incredible diving save to her left to keep the Beavers off the scoreboard.

Farmington opened the 2nd half with continued pressure and were finally awarded with a goal and first-year midfielder Jenna Lee (Farmingdale, Maine) made a series of moves to free herself at the top of the penalty area before blasting a right-footed shot into the back of the net, tying the game up at one in the 53rd minute.

The Beaver furiously tried to score the go-ahead goal but were unable to find the back of the net for a second time despite totaling 11 shots in the second half and carrying a majority of the possession. Tracy appeared to have the game-winner in the 74th minute when her shot beat Voisine, but an Owls defender was in the right place at the right time to clear the ball out of the goal mouth and keep the game tied.

Team Stats:

Farmington held steep advantages in shots (19-5), shots on goal (14-5), and corner kicks (7-1) in the game.

The Goalkeepers:

Gonya recorded four saves to preserve the tie for Farmington. Voisine made 12 big saves for Presque Isle.
