Hot Shooting Leads Beavers to Blow Out Win Over Lesley

FARMINGTON, Maine — The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team came out firing from the opening tip, shooting a season-high 54.0% from the field, including 66.7% (14-for-21) from beyond the arc, in a wire-to-wire 92-43 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory on Sunday afternoon.

The Records:

The Beavers continued their hot streak, having won six of their last seven games to improve to 8-8 overall this season. With the win, they also moved to 5-3 in NAC play. Lesley dropped to 6-11 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

How it Happened:

Melissa Mayo (Bridgton, Maine) got the Beaver offense rolling right away, scoring a layup while drawing a foul and then hitting the free throw to convert the three-point play on Farmington's first possession of the game. Two possessions later, Mayo hit another layup, staking the Beavers to a quick 5-0 lead as part of an early 19-4 run to open the game. Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine), Jaydn Pingree (Jay, Maine), and Audrey Mackie (South Thomaston, Maine) all knocked down three-pointers during the opening run.

After a layup by Mariana Richwine pulled the Lynx within 13 with under three minutes left in the first quarter, Farmington closed the period on an 11-0 run, effectively putting the game away early. Mayo and Jazmine Pingree (Jay, Maine) each drilled a three-pointer to highlight the run, which capped off Farmington's highest-scoring quarter of the season, giving the Beavers a 32-8 lead after the first 10 minutes.

In the second quarter, both teams struggled with turnovers, committing seven each, but the Beavers continued to extend their lead. Mayo scored five points, while Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) added four points in the period, helping Farmington open up a 31-point lead by halftime.

The third quarter belonged to Pingree, who scored 10 of the Beavers' 21 points. She knocked down a pair of three-pointers and grabbed two offensive rebounds, helping extend Farmington's lead to 66-27 heading into the fourth quarter.

Farmington's offense didn't slow down in the fourth. Mayo hit her third and fourth three-pointers of the game, while Mackie made her third triple on three of the Beavers' first four possessions of the period, sparking a 10-0 run that pushed the lead to 49. Emily Small (Cumberland, Maine) and Autumn Freeman (Byron, Maine) also knocked down three-pointers in the quarter, and the Beavers shot a perfect 5-for-5 from beyond the arc. Farmington's lead ballooned to as much as 55 points.
