FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington wrapped up their back-to-back games with another victory, defeating SUNY Cobleskill, 89-71, on Tuesday evening in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup at Dearborn Gymnasium.
The Records:
The win for Farmington marks their third consecutive victory, improving their record to 7-7 on the season and 4-1 in NAC play. Cobleskill dropped to 4-8 overall with a 1-3 record against NAC opponents.
How it Happened:
The Beavers wasted no time establishing an early lead, connecting on five of their first six shot attempts, including a pair of threes from Simon Chadbourne (Portland, Maine) and a three from the left wing by first-year guard Gabe Michaud (Gorham, Maine), to take a quick 13-4 advantage.
Farmington's offense continued to roll, even after Cobleskill pulled back within six points with 14 minutes left in the first half. Chadbourne drilled his third three-pointer of the half, and Farmington got another deep three from sophomore Brayden St. Pierre (Readfield, Maine) to open up a double-digit lead at 23-11.
After Zach McLaughlin (Hampden, Maine) hit a turnaround jumper to give Farmington a 14-point lead with seven minutes left in the first half, Tristian George scored six points, including a transition three-pointer, to spark a 10-0 Fighting Tiger run, cutting the deficit to just four points.
St. Pierre responded by drilling a three from four feet beyond the arc to halt Cobleskill's run. McLaughlin then nailed a three of his own, and Chadbourne hit a jumper in the lane in the final minute to give Farmington a 44-32 lead heading into halftime.
The Beavers began to pull away in the first five and a half minutes of the second half. Chadbourne hit three tough threes, and Brock Flagg (Brewer, Maine) scored six points, highlighting a 17-4 stretch for Farmington, which opened up a 25-point advantage.
After Chadbourne's seventh three-pointer of the game gave Farmington a 26-point lead, their largest of the game, Cobleskill dug deep and mounted a run of their own. Chalik Rush hit two threes, while Devin Dennard and Chrischen Chung each hit deep balls for the Fighting Tigers, who went on an 18-5 spurt to pull back within 13 points with 7:40 left in the game.
Will Harriman (Biddeford, Maine) drilled a three from the corner to end Cobleskill's run and helped steady the Beavers offensively. Farmington's offense extended the lead back up to 21 points in the final minutes, putting the game on ice.
Stats of the Game:
Farmington was highly efficient from the field, shooting 57.6% (34-of-59) for the game and 56% (14-for-25) from beyond the arc. Cobleskill shot 43.9% (29-for-66) from the field and 36.4% (8-of-22) from three-point range. Farmington held a 32-27 advantage on the boards. Both teams recorded 14 turnovers.
Leaders - Farmington:
- Chadbourne finished with a game-high 27 points, shooting an efficient 10-for-15 from the floor and 7-of-11 from three-point range. He also grabbed seven rebounds.
- Harriman contributed 17 points, shooting 8-for-16 from the floor.
- McLaughlin came off the bench to score 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including a perfect 2-for-2 from three.
- Dylan Griffin (Saco, Maine) recorded a career-high 12 assists and also grabbed seven rebounds.
Leaders - Cobleskill:
- Chung led four Fighting Tigers in double figures, finishing with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting, along with four assists and three rebounds.
- Rush added 12 points, four rebounds, four steals, and three assists.
- George and Dennard each contributed 10 points for Cobleskill.
