Second Half Surge Pushes Huskies Past Beavers

FARMINGTON, Maine – After Farmington battled back to tie the game at one early in the second half, the University of Southern Maine responded with three unanswered goals to take control and secure a 4-1 non-conference victory on Wednesday afternoon at Leib Field.

The Records

The loss drops the Beavers below .500 at 4-5-1 overall, while the win marks the first of the season for the Huskies, improving them to 1-2-6.

How It Happened

After a quiet opening 30 minutes, the Huskies struck first when Exauce Lenge tapped home a pass across the goal mouth from Colin Albert, giving Southern Maine a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies dictated possession and tempo for much of the first half, outshooting the Beavers 11-1. Only two of those attempts were on target, but one found the back of the net.

Farmington wasted no time equalizing in the opening 90 seconds of the second half. JJ Greenlaw (Farmington, Maine) launched a long throw-in into the box that found senior Caelan Billings (Sullivan, Maine). Billings settled the ball and flicked it over a pair of Husky defenders to first-year Garrett Gendreau (Waterville, Maine), who muscled it into the back of the net to make it 1-1.

Southern Maine nearly regained the lead just four minutes later when Alex Graver fired a free kick from 20 yards out that sailed just inches over the crossbar.

In the 61st minute, Graver helped put the Huskies back in front. He carried the ball deep into the Beavers' defensive third, worked the endline, and sent a cross to Cole Johnson, who one-timed a finish into the net for a 2-1 advantage.

The Huskies added a key insurance goal in the 84th minute. After Gendreau made a highlight defensive save to deny Nick Mauro, the rebound fell to Peter Sargent, who converted the open-net opportunity.

Graver capped the scoring in the 86th minute with a penalty kick, sealing the 4-1 win for Southern Maine.
