Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Beavers Use Big 1st Quarter to Power Past Hartwick

CASTLETON, Vt. – The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team closed out the first quarter and opened the second on a 19-0 run, opening up a 26-9 lead and never looking back in a 75-64 victory over Hartwick University. With the win, the Beavers improved to 2-0 on the weekend and finished the Spartan Classic undefeated.

How it Happened:

Farmington struck quickly, opening up a 7-0 lead on layups from Jaydn Pingree (Jay, Maine) and Sarah Poli (Benton, Maine), along with a deep three from Audrey Mackie (South Thomaston, Maine). Hartwick settled in and responded with a 9-4 burst, highlighted by five points from Emma Cohen, cutting the deficit to 11-9 midway through the first quarter.

From the 5:12 mark of the first quarter through the 7:24 mark of the second, the Beavers' defense completely stifled the Hawks—keeping them off the scoreboard, forcing ten turnovers, and fueling a 19-0 run to take a commanding 30-9 lead. Pingree and junior guard/forward Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) each scored six points during the run.

Farmington led by as many as 25 in the second quarter, but a pair of free throws from Cohen and a deep three from Leah Schoonover on Hartwick's final possession cut the deficit to 44-24 at halftime.

The Beavers continued to dominate early in the third quarter, opening with an 11-2 run to extend their lead to 26, their largest of the game. After Farmington forced 18 turnovers that led to 24 points in the first half, the Hawks tightened up offensively in the second half and began to battle back, matching the Beavers with 20 points in the third quarter. Ryleigh Enders and Kylie Guarino combined for nine points in the final 2:34 of the quarter, making it a 20-point game heading into the fourth.

Farmington maintained a comfortable double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter. Hartwick cut the lead to 11 in the final minutes, but with just three seconds remaining, it was too little, too late, as the Beavers secured their second win in as many days.
