Farmington Powers Past Presque Isle, 89-38

FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team came out energized on Friday evening, mounting a 40-point lead in the opening half of play and cruising to an 89–38 victory over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action.

The Records:

Farmington got back into the win column, moving to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in NAC play. UMPI dropped to 1-8 overall and remained winless at 0-4 against conference opponents.

How It Happened:

The Beavers used an aggressive full-court press to wreak havoc on the Owls right from the opening tip. Farmington forced 11 turnovers in the first quarter and 14 more in the second, building a 53-12 lead after just 20 minutes of play. In the first half alone, the Beavers' 25 forced turnovers resulted in 31 points off turnovers, including 17 fast-break points.

Farmington was able to get easy buckets in transition and was led by sophomore standout Jaydn Pingree (Jay, Maine) and junior Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) during the opening half of action. Pingree scored 13 points while Dow added 11 in the first half, with the duo combining for 16 of the team's 30 second-quarter points.

After shooting just 4-for-22 in the opening half, Presque Isle began to find its footing in the third quarter and outscored the Beavers 16-15. Camryn Ala and Aleyah Matheson each scored six points in the quarter.

After turning to the bench unit, Farmington received strong play from first-year forward Lilly Gray (Benton, Maine) and sophomore forward Liz Grondin (Jay, Maine) in the fourth quarter. Gray scored 12 of her game-high 18 points, shooting 4-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line in the quarter. Grondin hauled in nine rebounds and scored four points, including a smooth post move that led to a left-handed finish while drawing a foul in the final ten minutes of the game.

Overall, every active Beaver logged nine or more minutes of playing time, and all but two players registered at least one made field goal in the dominant victory.

Leaders – Farmington:

  • Gray led all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting to go along with four rebounds and three steals.
  • Pingree finished with 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor and added five rebounds in just 16 minutes of action.
  • Dow contributed 11 points, three rebounds, and four steals while shooting 5-of-7 from the field.

Leaders – Presque Isle:

  • Navaeh Bello came off the bench to score a team-high 12 points in 30 minutes of action.
  • Ala, Matheson, Lindsay Hamilton, and Logan Curtis each finished with six points for the Owls.

The Beavers will close out the first semester on Saturday afternoon, playing host to Husson University at 4:00 p.m.
