Berticelli and Leib Enshrined Into Maine Soccer Hall of Fame Inaugural Class

FARMINGTON, Maine — On Saturday, December 6, a pair of University of Maine at Farmington soccer legends, Robert Leib and Mike Berticelli, were inducted into the Maine Soccer Hall of Fame's inaugural class.

Berticelli, a 1973 UMF graduate and a member of the UMF Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 1999, was inducted into his second Hall of Fame in the past 12 months. Berticelli, who passed away unexpectedly in 2000, was also inducted into the United Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame Class of 2025 in January.

Berticelli began his coaching career at Thomas College, where he served as the head men's soccer coach for four seasons. During that time, he compiled a 41-19-2 record and earned NAIA New England Coach of the Year honors before taking over as head men's soccer coach at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG).

During his four seasons at UNCG, Berticelli posted a 70-9-5 record and led the Spartans to back-to-back NCAA Division III National Championships in 1982 and 1983.

Following his dominant run at UNCG, Berticelli became the head men's soccer coach at Old Dominion University in 1984. He led the Monarchs to their first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament appearance in 1989. Across six seasons at Old Dominion, he compiled a 76-27-16 record, including three conference championships.

Berticelli then transitioned to the head coaching position at the University of Notre Dame, where he remained for ten seasons. During his tenure with the Fighting Irish, he posted a 104-80-19 overall record and earned three NCAA Tournament appearances. His 1996 team was one of the most successful in program history, winning the Big East Championship and earning the first NCAA Tournament victory in program history — coming against his former team, UNC Greensboro.

Leib is one of the most decorated coaches in Farmington history, spending more than 30 years at the University. He came to Farmington in 1977, taking over as the head men's soccer coach and serving through 2001. Leib then served as head coach of the women's soccer program from 1996 through 2007, retiring after the 2007 season. Across 31 seasons, Leib amassed more than 400 wins.

As head coach of the men's program, Leib compiled a 260-94-34 record. He finished his women's coaching career with a 151-63-16 record. He led the men's team to a program-best 15 victories in both 1982 and 1996. Additionally, he guided the men's team to the 1986 NAIA National Tournament and the women's team to the 2002 NAIA National Tournament.

Leib was also instrumental in creating a summer sports camp at UMF for youth in Farmington and surrounding communities. Over the years he operated the camp, more than 2,700 children participated.

Overall, his coaching résumé includes 85 All-Conference selections, 34 All-State honorees, 29 All-NAIA District 5 players, 23 All-New England Region recipients, 17 All-Americans, 13 Academic All-Americans, and nine Coach of the Year honors at the conference, state, and regional levels.

Additionally, Greg Dugas, a member of the UMF Class of 1977, had his 1972 Gorham High School soccer team inducted into Maine Soccer Hall of Fame as well.
