McKenzie Tops the Slopestyle Podium, Earns 2nd National Championship Title of the Week

BEND, Oregon - University of Maine at Farmington first-year freeskier Natalee McKenzie (Kingfield, Maine) continued her phenomenal week at the USCSA National Championship, earning her second National Championship, topping the podium in Thursday's slopestyle event.

The women's slopestyle event consisted of 34 athletes. Each of the athletes went through two runs. Each athlete's highest score out of the two rounds, was the score that was used to calculate their placement in the qualifying round. The top-12 finishers in the qualifying round advanced onto the Finals.

The Finals were structured in an identical fashion to the qualifying round as each athlete was given two runs with the best run of the two determining their placement.

McKenzie had a pair of nearly flawless runs in the qualifying round, scoring an 81.00 in her first run and an 89.00 in her second. Although the 89.00 was the score that was used for her overall scoring, McKenzie's two runs were the top-two scores of any skier on the course.

Moving into the Finals, McKenzie entered as the top-seed. In her first run, she wasn't quite as smooth, scoring a 52.33 and sat in 7th place. Despite the unfortunate first run, McKenzie bounced back in a big way, scoring a 91.00 in her second run, blowing out the competition en route to her second gold medal of the week.

Alongside McKenzie was senior Tegan Andrew (Goffstown, N.H.) who had a strong showing in the slopestyle event, placing fifth overall. Andrew completed a pair of consistent runs in the qualifying round, scoring a 60.33 in her first run and a 62.67 judges score in the second run.

Andrew entered the Finals round as the sixth overall seed. In her first run of the Finals, Andrew finished with a score of 64.33, the fourth highest score in the first run of any athlete. Andrew did not calculate a score in the second run as she dropped into fifth place.

Together, McKenzie and Andrew finished 3rd overall, earning 36 place points. Liberty University topped the Claremont Colleges via a tiebreak to earn the team National Championship.
